The Los Angeles Lakers‘ worst loss of the season came on Monday with a 29-point defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves where they looked utterly uncompetitive. They somehow got worse in their next game against the Miami Heat, losing 93-134 tonight in what everyone would call their new worst loss of the season.
Anthony Davis has scored 20 combined points in these games, looking like a shadow of the MVP we saw lead the Lakers to the No. 3 seed earlier this season. He understood his responsibility in ensuring the Lakers’ success, accepting the blame for the team’s struggles amidst his shoddy run of performances.
“I personally think it starts with me. If I play better then guys will play better”
Davis harped on the importance of the team staying united and not letting these losses spiral into something worse.
“We can’t separate. We gotta stay together as a team, as a unit, and make sure that this doesn’t turn into something that we don’t want.”
“It’s on us. It’s on us players, to be honest. We’re getting the schemes,” said Davis absolving the coaching of any blame. The schemes are on point. But we just gotta go out and do it and execute ’em. But I just gotta step up for the team.”
Davis had eight points (3-14 FG), seven rebounds, five assists, and one block on the night, looking completely lost on the court. His last two games have come against DPOY-level big men in Rudy Gobert and Bam Adebayo, with those defenders getting the best of Davis in back-to-back matchups.
It’s safe to say Davis’ MVP campaign is dead in the water now with his torrid performances and the Lakers slipping to the No. 9 seed with this loss. Davis’ comments about coaching were echoed by LeBron James as well, who himself made it clear that the Lakers’ coaching staff don’t deserve any blame for what’s happening right now.
“Whatever (JJ Redick) said, I agree. 100%, 1000%… It has been preached since July, so there should be an understanding… It’s not on the coaches. It’s definitely on us, [the players], for sure.”
Anthony Davis is averaging 26.9 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists so far this season. He was averaging over 30 points and playing at a DPOY level just a week ago, but his performances have shockingly dipped over recent games. He needs to up his performance ASAP, as anyone who has watched the Lakers closely in recent years knows that Davis is more important to the Lakers’ success than LeBron at this point.
