Chandler Parsons: Austin Rivers Getting To Play Under Doc Rivers Is More Strange Than LeBron And Bronny James

Chandler Parsons spoke about why Austin and Doc Rivers working together was stranger than seeing Bronny and LeBron James play together.

Former Clippers player Chandler Parsons spoke on FanDuel’s ‘Run It Back’ about LeBron and Bronny James. He noted that he found Doc Rivers coaching his own son, Austin, on the Clippers to be far stranger, and recalled feeling a way about seeing Rivers picked ahead of him. Lou Williams defended Austin and noted that he kept personal and professional separate.

Chandler Parsons: “I think it more strange, back in the day when Austin Rivers played for his dad [Doc]. A player is always going to feel some way about the coach. ‘Uh, he snubbed me. You subbed me out too early.’”

“Three minutes to go, and he looks down the bench and picks Austin to go in instead of me. I’m going to feel a little slighted by that. I can’t help but think that’s favoritism. That to me is weirder than Bronny and LeBron playing together.”

Lou Williams: “Once you’re in that scenario though, you have to remember, Austin Rivers is a real deal pro. So him going into a game isn’t something that he was given, it was earned… Austin made it very clear, ‘Look that’s my dad, but you guys are my teammates and that’s where we draw the line. You don’t have to worry about me saying anything’.”

“Yes, that’s your dad, but who runs home and gossips to their dad as a grown man at this point in your life?… When you have that dynamic, it’s a little strange, a little weird, but I thought Austin did a great job separating himself from a lot of the hoopla, Bronny is going to do the same thing.”

Austin Rivers, it should be noted, made it to the NBA without his father’s help or input. He was a top-10 pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, going to the New Orleans Pelicans. It was only in 2015 that Rivers joined the Clippers after two consecutive three-team trades. And Rivers was still made dispensible by the Clippers, as they traded him to the Rockets despite Doc Rivers still being the coach for the Clippers at the time.

Bronny James Will Earn His Keep With Lakers

JJ Redick, head coach of the Lakers, has made it very clear that he will treat Bronny James no differently than he does any other player on his team. In fact, Redick even admitted that he wants Bronny to set goals that involve him being defensive-minded and focusing on getting stops.

There has been a lot of chatter in the media about Bronny James, and LeBron James has gotten tired of it, noting that he doesn’t want to answer any more questions about his son, and just wants to let him find his way as a player.

LeBron James and Bronny got to share the court together last week when the Lakers took on the Suns in a preseason game. It was a poor outing for Bronny, who put up 0 points, 2 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 blocks, 0 steals with 3 personal fouls and 4 turnovers, and made mistakes that cost the Lakers the game. Regardless of the off night, James noted that playing with his son was a moment he would never forget.

Bronny James is expected to play for the Lakers on opening night as they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves, which will allow LeBron James and Bronny to play together in an official NBA game. For Bronny’s sake, he will hope that night goes better than their preseason outing together.
