The Los Angeles Lakers didn’t put up a fight as they lost 91-132 to the Miami Heat last night in their worst loss of the season. It was a disaster on both ends of the court for the Lakers, whose competitive hopes have been dashed with a rude awakening about the state of their players and if this group can compete for a title.
Lakers legend and commentator James Worthy went off on the players after the game, suggesting they ride a bus from Miami to Atlanta and have White Castle burgers on the way to reflect on the shambolic performance they had against the Heat.
“They need to get on the bus tonight and get some White Castle burgers and drive to Atlanta. And they need to think about who they are, and what they need to do because what they’re doing right now ain’t even close to Laker basketball. Not even close.”

Worthy has said some bold things over recent seasons, but this had a very different tone to it. He didn’t seem worked up or angry, he just looked incredibly disappointed with how the players conducted themselves on the court for a 41-point blowout loss. You can’t even be mad at the players after a loss like that, as it’s clear they’re in a fragile state right now and their current slump could get worse overnight.
The Lakers saw LeBron James overcome an incredibly rough stretch of games and have 29 points (12-18 FG) and eight assists tonight, while Anthony Davis put up eight points (3-14 FG), seven rebounds, and five assists. Three other Lakers – Rui Hachimura (14 PTS), D’Angelo Russell (12 PTS), and Max Christie (11 PTS) – scored in double digits, but the franchise as a whole couldn’t hold a candle to Miami’s electric offense.
The Heat shot 52-80 from the field (57.8 FG%) and 24-47 (51.1 3P%) from three, with their three-pointers tying a franchise record for most in a single game. It wasn’t a result of just the Heat players being hot, but the Lakers gave up some incredibly easy shots without even bothering to contest it, whether on the perimeter or in the paint.
This loss dropped the Lakers to 12-10 on the season and the No. 9 seed in the West. The reason Worthy suggested they go to Atlanta is because they’ll be continuing their current road trip by facing the Atlanta Hawks on Friday. Given the Hawks are tied for the longest active win streak in the NBA (5), this could be another big blow to the Lakers if they can’t fix their form.
