Damian Lillard looked to make history at the 2025 NBA Three-Point Contest but it was Tyler Herro who did so by walking away with the trophy. Herro just about beat out Buddy Hield in the final round to become the fifth Miami Heat player to win the contest, an NBA record.
While the contest as a whole might have not lived up to expectations, we got a thrilling finish and NBA fans had some interesting reactions to it.
“Went from trade rumors. To 6th man of the year. To 3pt champion and All-Star,” one fan was full of praise for Herro.
“Best shooter in the league.” one boldly claimed Herro is the best shooter in the NBA.
“Perfect example of the Buddy cycle. Balls out, get my hopes up, crashes out,” one fan felt the final round summed up Hield.
“Damn Dame really choked,” one thought Lillard choked here.
“Worst 3pt contest ever,” one fan felt this was the worst contest ever.
This certainly wasn’t the worst ever, but it could have been a lot better. You’d want to see better performances with how many threes players shoot these days.
Herro himself nearly missed out on even making the final round, as he only managed to score 19 points in the first. Two-time defending champion Lillard looked set to knock him out after a hot start but cooled down later and only managed 18 to end his dreams of a three-peat.
Someone who didn’t have to sneak into the final round was Hield, who racked up 31 points in the first round. He tied his Golden State Warriors teammate Stephen Curry’s record for most points in a round in the NBA in the process.
Joining Herro and Hield in the final round was Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland, who had 24 points. Garland and Hield were the only players who managed to get a score over 20 in the first, which explains why fans were underwhelmed.
Herro then breached that mark fairly easily in the final round, as he finished with 24 points, the same score as Garland in the first round. The Cavaliers guard then ended up with Herro’s score in the first, as he only managed 19.
That meant Hield could win the contest with 25 points and he came ever so close. The Warriors guard had 15 points as he reached his final rack and needed to make all five to win. He made the first three but then missed the fourth to get knocked out of contention.
Hield did make the final one to finish with 23 points, just one shy of Herro’s tally. It would have been quite the finish had he made all five. While Hield was understandably disappointed, Herro was thrilled. This is shaping up to be quite the All-Star weekend for the guard, who will also be playing in the big game for the first time on Sunday.
