Timberwolves Should Sign Elite Free Agent Sharpshooter To Improve Roster Strength

Among the several teams showing an interest in acquiring Malik Beasley this offseason, the Minnesota Timberwolves may benefit the most from pursuing him.

Malik Beasley has generated significant interest for his services in the free agency market this offseason, particularly from teams with championship aspirations. With teams such as the Cleveland Cavaliers and the New York Knicks pursuing him, the guard has some avenues to remain in the NBA available to him.

In recent developments, the Minnesota Timberwolves have also shown an interest in landing Beasley in the free agent market, per HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. He tweeted:

“Update: The Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves have recently touched base on Malik Beasley, along with the New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers, sources told @hoopshype. It’s worth noting Cavs guard Max Strus expects to miss 3-4 months after Jones fracture foot surgery.”

Scotto initially noted the Cavs’ interest in Beasley due to Max Strus’ injury, creating the need for immediate replacement.

Given Cleveland’s position, they would certainly appear to be an intriguing choice for the veteran guard if he aims to join a title-contending roster. But given Cleveland’s cap situation, they may face some challenges while attempting to acquire him.

Instead, Beasley’s former teams, the Detroit Pistons and the Minnesota Timberwolves, may have more promise. On this note, the Wolves would particularly benefit from making a strong charge to acquire the 28-year-old guard.

Last season, the veteran guard was among the elite sharpshooters in the NBA. He finished second in three-pointers made with 319, only one away from tying league-leader Anthony Edwards. With this, Beasley showcased his innate ability to knock down shots from distance.

With averages of 16.3 points and 2.6 rebounds, on shooting splits of 43.0% from the field, 41.6% from three-point range, and 67.9% from the charity stripe, the 28-year-old established himself as a crucial member of Detroit’s rotation.

While being a legitimate perimeter threat, the guard also established himself as a viable defensive option in the Pistons’ rotation. Although his consistency as a defender is debatable, his overall contributions saw him finish second in voting for the 6MOY award.

Beasley’s reputation as a three-point shooter speaks for itself, and on a team like Minnesota, his skill set would also be highly valued.

The Wolves haven’t made significant changes to their roster this offseason. Instead, they ensured that they retained their core. By re-signing key roster pieces such as Julius Randle and Naz Reid, the franchise effectively committed to running it back in the upcoming season.

Unfortunately, in the process of re-signing Reid and Randle, the Wolves saw the departure of an important bench player in Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who joined the Atlanta Hawks in free agency.

Alexander-Walker’s departure has an impact on the Wolves’ wing depth. While Minnesota has players such as Donte DiVincenzo and Terrence Shannon Jr. who could step into the role, acquiring an experienced 3-and-D player like Beasley may prove to be a better alternative.

In addition to his skills, Beasley also has a previous connection with the franchise. Having been with the team between 2020-22, the guard established himself as a capable rotation piece. Having improved upon his craft since then, a potential reunion could be in the interest of both parties involved.

Barring the scandals and gambling controversy he was involved in during the offseason, Beasley could eventually find himself back on an NBA roster in the upcoming season. With a point to prove after enduring such challenges, the 28-year-old may simply opt for the best deal available to him.

The Pistons Remain A Viable Landing Spot

The Detroit Pistons will certainly be an appealing destination for Beasley in free agency. Given the individual success he enjoyed with the team, owed to their offensive system, the guard may find himself drawn towards the idea of returning.

The Pistons are a team with a lot of potential. Led by a young star in Cade Cunningham and featuring a talented young core, Detroit could take the East by storm.

In this regard, Beasley’s role and chemistry with the team were established. As a vital cog in the team’s rotation, the Pistons would certainly hope to have him back on the roster in time for training camp.
