Jrue Holiday recently offered candid advice to his former teammate, Zion Williamson, suggesting that a change in scenery might be necessary for the New Orleans Pelicans star to unlock his full potential. Speaking on ‘Podcast P with Paul George’, Holiday expressed admiration for Williamson’s extraordinary talent and athleticism but emphasized the need for a “fit adjustment,” either by the Pelicans reconfiguring their roster or Williamson seeking a better situation elsewhere.

“I think Zion is one of the most gifted players I’ve ever seen. Athletic ability, how he can get to the rim by people, and I feel like sometimes it’s about fit, and maybe I don’t know if they have to adjust the fit to him down there or maybe slide out and have a different fit with somebody else.”

“But I feel like he needs a change in some kind of way because he is promising, bro. At least when I had him as a rookie, it was amazing; that’s just what he was capable of. They talk about the weight gain and doing all that, but I’ve seen him at 280, 290 still above the rim.”

Holiday’s comments came amid another challenging season for Williamson and the Pelicans. Despite Williamson’s undeniable offensive prowess, averaging 22.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in limited appearances this season, the Pelicans have struggled to a dismal 4-17 record. Injuries continue to plague Williamson’s career, raising questions about his long-term future in New Orleans.

Holiday highlighted Williamson’s rookie season as a glimpse of his potential, recalling how dominant he could be, even at a playing weight of 280-290 pounds. However, he acknowledged that the constant chatter about Williamson’s weight and conditioning has overshadowed his capabilities. Holiday’s primary critique was not about Williamson’s offense but his defense, suggesting that a more focused effort on that end could elevate his game and inspire his teammates.

This advice aligns with Holiday’s identity as a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate and underscores his belief that Williamson’s defensive growth is crucial for his development and the team’s success.

The Pelicans, in recent years, have been stuck in mediocrity despite boasting a promising core. Williamson has missed significant time due to injuries, including this season, where a severe hamstring issue has sidelined him for multiple weeks. As a result, the Pelicans’ postseason aspirations have faded, prompting discussions about potential roster overhauls.

Holiday’s comments echo sentiments from analysts and fans who have observed Williamson’s struggles to meet lofty expectations. While the Pelicans have invested heavily in building around him, their current trajectory suggests that a rebuild—or a significant trade involving Williamson—might be on the horizon. His defensive inconsistencies and frequent absences have only compounded the team’s issues, leaving them in a precarious position.

Ultimately, Holiday’s advice is rooted in the belief that Williamson is too talented to be stuck in a situation that doesn’t maximize his abilities. Whether that means a renewed commitment to defense, a revamped Pelicans roster, or a fresh start with another franchise, the message is clear: Zion Williamson’s potential deserves a stage where it can truly shine.
