New Orleans Pelicans star forward Zion Williamson has stunned several fans with his impressive offseason transformation. After receiving significant criticism for his weight issues, Williamson appears to have taken it upon himself to return to game shape.
However, the drastic transformation hasn’t been well-received by all. In a recent episode of “Speakeasy,” former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho made a rather controversial statement.
“I know Ozempic when I see it,” said Acho, immediately sharing a response to the question about Williamson’s transformation. “I don’t even need these glasses for him. I can spot Ozempic without these.”
“Zion was supposed to be the next superstar of the NBA, and it just hasn’t materialized. Number one – Take care of your physical, Zion. But also, take care of your mentals, bro.”
Acho continued to critique Williamson’s off-court drama and struggles, which have somehow overshadowed his performances during games. With particular reference to his weight, it’s been evident that the impact on his performance and availability has been significant.
The former NFL player’s accusation, while jarring, wouldn’t be the first time an athlete has been speculated to be using the weight-loss drug.
Following the results of his drastic offseason transformation, even Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic faced a question regarding the use of Ozempic, something the guard clearly denied.
The criticism directed toward Williamson, while exaggerated, also seems justified. Given the investment the Pelicans organization has made in the forward, his unavailability and supposed indiscipline aren’t validated.
Seeing the 25-year-old healthy is a largely positive sign. Williamson himself claims that he is currently in the best shape he has been in since his college days, and considering what he was capable of back then, the league could be put on notice.
When healthy, the forward remains one of the most dominant players in the league. Although he isn’t a three-level scorer like most of his modern counterparts, Williamson leverages his athleticism and sheer strength to dominate in the paint and attack the rim.
Last season, he appeared in just 30 games for New Orleans. Still, he averaged 24.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists on 56.7% shooting from the field.
In his sophomore season, Williamson appeared in 61 games, averaging 27.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game on 61.1% shooting from the field. In the 2023-24 season, he appeared in 70 games, averaging 22.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game on 57.0% shooting overall.
Given his influence on the game, it is evident that the Pelicans benefit from having him on the floor. On that note, the upcoming season seems far more promising.
With solid offseason additions, along with the return of key role players from injury, New Orleans is primed to be a significantly more competitive team. Should the star forward find a way to remain healthy and consistent over the course of the regular season, they have a legitimate case to compete for a playoff berth.
