Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George could potentially find himself missing more playing time this season after sustaining a left knee injury during an offseason workout. Although he has already undergone an arthroscopic procedure to address the issue, an update on his recovery is expected closer to the start of training camp, according to The Athletic’s Fred Katz.

The general timeline for recovery after an arthroscopic procedure on a knee could be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, with full recovery taking up to several months.

In an unfortunate turn, the 35-year-old wing has added yet another injury to his long list of career setbacks. Having already missed half the games last season, George enters the 2025-26 campaign in an uncertain position with the franchise.

Last season, the forward recorded an average of 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game. As effective as he was, in his limited capacity, the 76ers couldn’t capitalize on his contributions, eventually ending the season with a 24-58 record and settling for 13th place in the East. Regardless, the franchise showed faith in their core and aimed to run it back with it intact.

Although George’s status will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp, his potential absence could have significant implications for the 76ers’ upcoming season.

The 76ers may very well have to prepare for the possibility of starting the season without a pivotal figure on their roster. When also considering that they could be without Joel Embiid, who is yet to begin on-court training activities after suffering a knee injury last season, Philadelphia is in a difficult position.

There is some expectation for Embiid to be ready in time for the season opener. As the superstar big man only played in 19 games for the team last season, they will certainly hope to see him return to the starting rotation to lead the team.

George’s absence could open the doors for some of the younger players on Philadelphia’s roster. The backcourt duo of Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain has already proven itself to be quite a potent combo. If George is expected to miss more playing time than expected, the 76ers could finally look at re-signing Quentin Grimes to a new contract.

Grimes, like most restricted free agents on the market, has been stuck in limbo. While garnering interest from teams, Philadelphia has shown no indication of willingness to part ways with him. His averages of 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists with the team last season were promising enough to demand such attention.

This could also be an opportunity for 76ers rookie VJ Edgecomb to receive more playing time in the upcoming season. Although the 20-year-old has been sidelined from Summer League activities with a thumb injury, the guard has displayed tremendous skill and athleticism, boasting a lot of potential for becoming a key player in the rotation.

George’s injury could also have significant implications for his future with the team. Considering that the forward was drawing some attention from teams on the trade market, the 76ers may opt to pull the trigger on such a deal to offload his contract.

Much of this speculation hinges on the severity of George’s injury and how long it would take for him to recover. But considering the number of setbacks he has suffered in the last few years, Philadelphia may consider restructuring their outlook on the forward.
