Nick Wright minced no words when describing how Michael Jordan’s ownership of the Charlotte Hornets was a failure while also adding that it should affect his legacy as the GOAT.
Speaking to Colin Cowherd on The Herd, the Fox Sports analyst went on a tirade when asked to share his thoughts on Jordan selling the Hornets earlier this month.
“Everyone must acknowledge if they are being honest that when Jordan took over the Hornets… 15 years ago, he turned them into a dynasty,” Wright said. “People would use it as evidence of his greatness. Can we all at least agree to that?”
He then added: “If he was awesome, then everyone would be ‘Oh! Look at MJ, everything he touches turns to gold.’ Instead, his ownership tenure of the Hornets was identical to his playing tenure when Scottie Pippen wasn’t his teammate.”

Quite simply, Wright’s argument was that if the Bulls icon had made Charlotte a winning franchise, it would have added more to his greatness. After a majority stake in the Hornets back in 2010 for the price of $275 million, he recently sold the team for $3 billion.
Earlier, Wright had echoed a similar sentiment on First Things First. “If it was awesome. If Jordan went from on the court to in the front office, and they reeled off championships, people would be like, ‘See, look at him; that’s one of the reasons he’s the GOAT. Everything he touches turns to gold.’
“So, when his run as owner, on the court, basketball-wise, he’s the worst in the league for 15 years, it’s gotta count a little… Or we’ve gotta take the other stuff away.”
Michael Jordan’s Tenure As The Hornets Owner Wasn’t A Successful One
From a business standpoint, Jordan made a killing off of his investment in the NBA franchise. An initial $275 million turned into a whopping$3 billion, per reports. While that is indeed news, it doesn’t change the fact that the Hornets were really a bad team during that time.
The Hornets never finished higher than the 6th seed in the East, they only made the playoffs thrice, and they never won a series. Adding to this was the fact that they haven’t made the postseason in seven straight seasons. Maybe MJ could have done a bit better on that front.
