The most anticipated individual battle of the season took place tonight as the Philadelphia 76ers traveled to face the Denver Nuggets with a few games left in the season for the MVP candidates on both teams.

Joel Embiid dominated Nikola Jokic in their last head-to-head matchup. Yesterday, he gave an interview taking multiple subliminal shots at Jokic about this year’s MVP race. He followed that up by announcing he won’t play against the Nuggets, causing fans in Denver to make up a ‘missing’ poster for Embiid.

The Nuggets beat the 76ers 111-116 on the night, dropping Philly to their fourth loss in their last five games. They’ve lost ground on the Boston Celtics for the second seed in the East as a result, sitting 3 games behind the C’s now. Nikola Jokic had 25 points, 17 rebounds, and 12 assists in yet another dominant performance.

Will The MVP Race Come Down To Joel Embiid And Nikola Jokic?

For the last few months, everyone has just made the battle for the MVP between Embiid and Jokic given the rivalry the two have built over 3 seasons for the award. It genuinely looks like Embiid may win the award along with the scoring title this season based on the narratives around the award. Embiid is averaging 33.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists while Jokic is averaging 24.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 9.9 assists this season.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is still very much playing at MVP caliber with 31.1 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game average on the season. Sadly, it looks like the former 2-time MVP will not resonate in the minds of the voters as much as Embiid and Jokic. The Nuggets have a better record than the 76ers and minor things like that may end up deciding the award winner. These last handful of games will be significant to the MVP cases of both players.
