It’s been over three years now since ‘The Last Dance’ aired on streaming services for basketball fans around the world. Apparently, the Boston Celtics may be planning a sequel for the show in their own version that covers their run in the 2023-24 season.
“Nothing to officially report yet, but we are in production on a multi-part, absolutely top-quality fantastic documentary series along the lines of, hopefully, ‘The Last Dance,’” Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck said, via Justin Turpin. “We are deep into that. We have signed contracts. Film is being filmed, archives are being gone through, and it’s in process.”
A camera crew has been following the Celtics all season long and Grousbeck says the film will release regardless of whether or not they win the title. While he compared the project to “The Last Dance,” the Celtics will be just one of a number of Boston-themed sports teams with their own documentary, which already includes the Red Sox and the New England Patriots.
The reception among the fans has been mixed so far, with many feeling that the Celtics haven’t done anything to warrant a season-long documentary. Others feel that it’s a good way to get a deeper look into this Celtics squad and see what kind of things are required for a championship team to function.
So far, there hasn’t been any indication that the project has been a distraction for the Celtics, and their record this season has shown nothing but dominance. But with a history of playoff disappointments, the jury is out on whether the Cs are ready to win it all and if they can get out of their own way to finish the job and bring a title back to the city. Regardless of how the public feels, the Celtics think something special is happening and they wanted to be sure to capture it while they still have the chance.
Can The Celtics Win A Championship This Season?
The original “Last Dance” documentary covered the story of the 1998 Chicago Bulls, which was the last stand of the greatest dynasty in NBA history. They were already 5x champions at the time and had a legend in Michael Jordan who many considered (and still consider) to be the greatest player of all time. In legendary fashion, the Bulls won the championship that season and their dynasty came to an end… all while the cameras captured it all from behind the scenes.
The modern-day Celtics seem to be hoping for a similar trajectory with the 2023-24 campaign, but the situation is just not the same. Unlike the 90s Bulls, these Celtics have proven nothing in the NBA postseason and they don’t have a single championship to their name. Jayson Tatum, unlike Michael Jordan, has never been favored to win MVP and his impact on the court (and on the screen) just doesn’t compare to the Bulls legend.
This season, with a 43-12 record, the Celtics have been the best team in the East by far and this could be the year that they finally have a breakthrough and win their first championship since 2008. If so, the documentary may turn out to be a classic.
But after years of playoff disappointments, there is reason to doubt the Celtics can close the deal and many fans are still unsure where to rank them in the race for the championship. For their sake, the Celtics better hope that this filming crew isn’t a distraction to the team this season, or they may come to regret starting this project in the first place.
