We have seen many NBA players give their all-time starting fives, but Patrick Beverley recently tried his hand at a different kind of lineup. On The Pat Bev Podcast with Rone, the 35-year-old shared his Least White All-White starting five.
“Tyler Herro, Donte DiVincenzo, Alex Caruso, Garrison Mathews, Chet Holmgren.”
Beverley was going to add New York Knicks big man Isaiah Hartenstein there, but remembered he had heard Hartenstein is Black.
“I was about to say boy from the Knicks but I heard he was Black,” Beverley said.
Rone assumed he was talking about DiVincenzo, but Beverley clarified that he was thinking of Hartenstein.
“I heard he’s from Houston, Texas,” Beverley continued. “Someone from his family is Black.”

Well, that someone in his family who is Black, is Isaiah’s father, Florian Hartenstein.

Florian was born in Mainz, Germany, to a German mother and an American father. He grew up there but headed to the US in 1997 to attend the University of Oregon. Florian played college basketball for four seasons and it was during that time that he met his future wife, Theresa, a White American woman. Isaiah was then born to them in 1998 and due to this mixed heritage of his, he used to identify himself as quarter-black.
Getting back to Beverley’s list, the first player he mentioned was Tyler Herro. The Milwaukee Bucks guard admitted Herro irks him a little but he respects his game and attitude.
Chet Holmgren was next and the pick wasn’t all that surprising. Earlier this season, Beverley had asked Shai Gilgeous-Alexander if Holmgren was the real deal, to which Shai replied, “He is a n****.”
Alex Caruso and Donte DiVincenzo were two other notable names to make it in, but Garrison Matthews was a pick that surprised many. Matthews went undrafted in 2019 and currently plays for the Atlanta Hawks. Beverley pointed to all the tattoos he has as a reason for adding him to the team.
Patrick Beverley’s All-Dawg Team
Beverley does appear to like forming these kinds of teams on his podcast from time to time. Earlier this year, Beverley revealed his NBA All-Dawg Team, which included Caruso, Joel Embiid, Draymond Green, Anthony Edwards, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Jimmy Butler.
Caruso appeared on both teams, which suggests he certainly has earned Beverley’s respect. The Chicago Bulls guard appears to have a fair few admirers around the league, including LeBron James.
As for Beverley’s criteria for someone to be regarded as a “Dawg,” they must have a relentless attitude and an unwavering commitment to doing whatever it takes to win. Along with that, they need to have a presence on the court, apply pressure defensively, and not be someone who can be pushed around.
Beverley might well be describing himself there, as he especially prides himself on doing whatever it takes to win. It is what has made him one of those players who fans love when he’s on their team, which has been the case in Milwaukee as well.
While Beverley hasn’t put up eye-popping numbers for the Bucks, with averages of 5.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game, he has managed to have an impact, especially on the defensive end.
