Nikola Jokic could finally take the crown as an NBA Champion this season after the Miami Heat were confirmed to be their opponents in the 2023 NBA Finals.

Jokic has earned more eyeballs than ever before on this Finals run, so former playoff rival Paul George explained to fans why guarding Jokic is as impossible as it is.

“His game is so different. He’s one of those guys when you look back at it and see what he’s doing, there’s nobody to compare him to. I think that’s why it’s so tough to understand and wrap our minds around how great of a talent he is. We know he is special but there’s just nobody we can compare him to… It’s such a fundamental game, it’s hard to explain. He counters everything and it’s precise. The timing makes it elite. If you reach or push up on him, it’s like ‘boom’. You realize it was a mistake and you shouldn’t have done that. It’s like, ‘Why can I not guard this dude man?’ We’ve never figured out how to guard him.”

Nikola Jokic led the Nuggets to a 3-1 comeback over the Clippers in 2020 when the Clippers were widely picked as the favorites to win the NBA title that season. The Serbian center went on to win two MVPs by carrying Denver into the playoffs when Michael Porter Jr. and Jamal Murray were injured. This season, he really may complete the goals of every legendary NBA player by winning a championship and a Finals MVP.

Nikola Jokic Cannot Be Ignored Anymore

Despite winning back-to-back MVPs, many people consistently called Jokic one of the weakest MVPs of the modern era by virtue of being eliminated early in the playoffs with his teammates injured. He’s proven what he can do when he’s on a healthy team before, and he might get to the pinnacle of basketball.

Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat won’t make it an easy coronation for the Nuggets, who are in their first-ever NBA Finals as a franchise. This series is going to be a war, as the Nuggets need to fight off the resilient and odds-defying Miami Heat roster that has already unseated two teams that were considered title favorites heading into the playoffs.
