Paul Pierce is warning NBA teams from hiring JJ Redick as a head coach after the 15-year-veteran has been heavily linked with the vacant Lakers head coach position. Pierce thinks Redick seems like a good option based on what we’ve seen from him in the media.

“If you want to make it look good and sound good, you go JJ Redick. You hear him, he sounds great, draws up plays, sounds like the right thing to do, sounds like he has a great IQ, sounds like he has a voice or demeanor for coaching. That’s what it sounds like.”

Even with how coach-ready Redick looks on his podcast, Pierce believes his coaching acumen is comparable to the looks of a model on Instagram where it looks good on social media but is something else in actuality.

“It’s like an IG model. It looks good all on there but when you see it in person, it ain’t what you think. It looks good when you scroll through the pics, but when you see in person, it ain’t what you think. I’m just telling y’all what it is, and that’s what I see with the Redick experience.”

Pierce: If you want to hire Redick cause what he says on a podcast sounds good, go ahead. You hear him drawing up plays, it sounds like the right thing to do, like he has great IQ. It’s like an IG model. It looks good, you scroll through the pics, but when you see in person, it ain’t what you think

Everyone is right to be concerned about Redick possibly getting into coaching. We have a recent example of how a novice head coach was put in charge of a title contender and how the failure virtually ended their career (Steve Nash in Brooklyn).

Redick could fall to the same fate if he’s given the Lakers job and the team continues struggling as it has in the past few seasons. He has no experience in coaching at any competitive level, which should be a cause for concern for teams like the Lakers or anyone else looking to hire him.

Udonis Haslem Thinks JJ Redick Should Stay Away From The Lakers Job

Major NBA media figures aren’t backing JJ Redick to be a successful coach on the Lakers, primarily because of his links with LeBron James. The fact that Redick is being put into these conversations after starting a podcast with LeBron would lead to a cynical locker room, according to Udonis Haslem.

“If it’s JJ [Redick], you’re going to have a cynical locker room. You’re gonna have guys saying, ‘Is the coach gonna do a podcast after the game with LeBron?’ He’s gonna have a cynical locker room that side-eyes everything JJ says. They’re gonna wonder, ‘Is it JJ’s message or is it LeBron’s message?'”

This is a very valid concern, as the ties between Redick and LeBron show that the Lakers are willing to compromise on experience and tactical nuance just to get a coach that LeBron might like.

James and Anthony Davis might endorse the decision in the short-term but Redick’s job could be just as easily threatened with a bad stretch of games as Darvin Ham’s was. It’s a dangerous job that could end Redick’s coaching career before it even starts.

Or, Redick turns out to be a Pat Riley level of coach and gets off to a hot start and implements the high talent of his players to the perfect level. The odds of that are much slimmer, so it explains why everyone is approaching this move with trepidation.
