Phil Jackson wasn’t amused by Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg cheering extensively for the Boston Celtics during the 2008 NBA Finals, and he let them know it.
Speaking to Bill Simmons, Damon relived the incident. “Ok, so this was in LA, but the game before, we had been like 23 points down in the 3rd quarter and come back and won. So that game… we’re down 21, 22 points in the third quarter and Paul Pierce just goes full ‘Truth’ mode and just goes bananas. And they had this unbelievable comeback.”
Damon further added that he and Wahlberg were sitting along with their agent and they were all having a fun time. “We’re cheering on the Celtics, as you do, and their run was capped by, I think, Pierce kinda sliced through the lane and laid the ball in to complete the comeback.”
“By the time he went up to lay the ball in, Phil’s already up because he’s like gotta call a timeout and try to stop the bleeding. And Wahlberg and I are like, ‘Oh my God!’, and as he calls the timeout, he just spins on us and he goes, ‘Sit down and shut the f**k up!’ He was so mad.”

For those who would have followed Jackson and his career as an illustrious coach, it’s hard to believe that the ‘Zen Master’ lost it. But then, such was the importance of the game that there was no doubt that he would be stressed, and neither Damon nor Wahlberg saw the coming.
All said, the duo did have the last laugh as the Celtics won the title that year before the Lakers bounced back to win in the 2010 NBA Finals.
Phil Jackson Doesn’t Reportedly Watch Basketball Games Anymore
For a man who earned his bread by coaching big teams, Phil Jackson doesn’t reportedly watch basketball games anymore.
Speaking on Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin, “I am not enjoying the game, that’s too bad. There’s a whole generation that doesn’t like the game. No, I don’t (watch basketball). I watched the game evolve and then they went into the lockout year and did something that was kind wanky, they did a bubble down in Orlando.”
He even shed light on the politics that became an instrumental part of the season in 2020.
Jackson has coached 11 NBA title-winning teams across tenures with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, three-peating thrice, twice with the Bulls, and once time with the Lakers (2000-2002). There is no doubt that Jackson will go down as one of the more decorated coaches in the history of the NBA.
