Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics had a dream start to the NBA season. The team just seemed head and shoulders above the rest of the league while Tatum was the clear frontrunner for MVP.

They weren’t able to push on from their hot start, however, and now have teams breathing down their neck in the Eastern Conference. Tatum had called out his team as well after they were blown out by the Oklahoma City Thunder last week and his message did get across, as they won 3 in a row after that. Still, the damage was already done and there’s a good chance now that the Celtics will drop out of the top spot in the coming weeks. With the Celtics having a blip, Richard Jefferson was asked if Tatum would be a starter for the All-Star game on his Road Trippin’ podcast and he had his doubts about that.”

“Talent-wise and this is not disrespect, we are talking about a two-time MVP, we’re talking about (Joel) Embiid that has finished second in MVP, we’re talking about KD, their team’s in second place right now, he’s the odd man out… He can not start and still win the MVP.”

“I said if his team is in first place, I think he should be a starter… Now if they get into the middle of February and they are second (shakes his head).”

Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo are certainly going to be starters, so that leaves us with Joel Embiid and Tatum competing for the final frontcourt spot. They are both having great seasons but you have to think Tatum would probably get the edge over Embiid because the Sixers are the fourth seed at the moment. It will most likely be very close and it’s a shame that all 4 of them won’t get to start because all of them deserve it.

Richard Jefferson Compared Jayson Tatum To LeBron James, Luka Doncic, And Nikola Jokic

While he has his doubts about Tatum being a starter in the All-Star game, Jefferson remains a very big fan of his. He compared him to LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Nikola Jokic, adding that Tatum is right on schedule. Jefferson wants Tatum to become better at distributing the basketball, as that would make it easier for him to play one-on-one as well.

With players like LeBron, Luka, and Jokic, the fact that they’re so willing to pass the ball means teams are hesitant to send double teams their way because they would pass it to the open man and get an easy basket. Once Tatum gets more comfortable with that aspect, it would enable him to take his game to another level.
