• Scoot Henderson believes he can still come out on top in the 2024 Rookie of the Year race

• No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama is an overwhelming favorite to win the award

• Henderson was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers with the No. 3 pick

The 2023 NBA Draft might have injected the NBA with some future superstars in Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson. The pair are getting ready to battle for the 2024 Rookie of the Year award in their debut season.

Henderson believes he can outshine Wembanyama to bring home the award, as he recently revealed in a sit-down interview.

“I will win Rookie of the Year. That’s just a mindset of a manifestation of that I kind of drew. Never doubted myself, you know, making sure I’m always playing good, make sure I’m telling myself, ‘I’m gonna have a great rookie season.’ I’m not saying I want to have a great rookie season, I’m gonna have a great rookie season. I’m gonna have a great career. I will have a great career and making sure that’s always in just past tense because it happened.”

Henderson went No. 3 overall to the Portland Trail Blazers. We wanted to see more of the young Blazers star during Summer League but an early injury meant he had to sit out most games to minimize the risk of it getting worse.

Wembanyama is being hailed as a generational prospect and was the No. 1 overall pick to the San Antonio Spurs. His impact is expected to be immense, so Henderson will have to have a historic rookie season to even compete with Wemby.

Scoot Henderson Waiting For A Damian Lillard Solution

As things stand, Henderson isn’t even the best guard on the Blazers. Damian Lillard hasn’t been traded yet, and that will have direct consequences for Scoot’s development

If Lillard continues to play, they’ll likely develop Henderson with defense and spacing in mind. He can do both of those things but has a much higher ceiling that can only be unlocked with open opportunities.

If Lillard gets moved, the Blazers will likely ask Henderson to have a greater role in initiating the offense alongside Anfernee Simons. Simons will make Henderson’s ability to stat pad for the ROTY trophy harder, but everyone would rather Hendo learns how to win and make good decisions instead of chasing individual glory.

Henderson averaged 17.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game last season in the G League Ignite.
