Sebastian Telfair played for 10 seasons in the NBA and earned millions of dollars in the process. During his recent interview with Vlad TV, Telfair was asked what was the best and worst purchase he made with his millions.
“Bought my mom a house,” Telfair said. “… That was definitely one of my proudest purchases, getting my mom a house, even though she wasn’t all that excited about leaving and all that.”
As for the worst purchases, Telfair went with everything he ever bought for his ex-wife.
“My worst purchase was my ex-wife,” Telfair stated. “Everything I bought for her, that was my worst purchase.”
Telfair’s ex-wife, Samantha Telfair, filed for divorce in 2019 citing irreconcilable differences. She was seeking sole legal and physical custody of their two kids and wanted the court to award her spousal support as well. She had also filed a restraining order against him, so it’s not all that surprising that Telfair has little to no love for her.
As for his mom, Telfair said she wasn’t all that keen on leaving the projects in New York, but eventually decided to do so. Looking back now, he thinks it was a bit of a mistake.
Sebastian Telfair Claims NBA Wives Are Gold Diggers
Telfair had a lot to get off his chest during this interview. The 38-year-old took a shot at his ex-wife here, and Telfair also said NBA wives are gold diggers.
“When I got into the NBA and I was going to the meetings they were saying, seven out of ten players get divorced now is nine out of ten players.”
“It’s the players, like, like dudes got to understand that pretty girl that’s on the side of you right now in that nice house, her energy will shift.”
“Nine out of 10. Kevin Garnett got a divorce. Shaq got a divorce. Michael Jordan got a divorce. So I wanna tell, this is for all the players. I’ll be the bad guy, I’ll be the one. Like, what Shorty saying next to us ain’t it.”
Telfair stated that he had discussions with the NBA about implementing measures to safeguard players from marital issues. He thinks cases like that of LeBron James and his wife Savannah are exceptions and not the norm, and urged today’s players to be cautious. I think his personal experiences have definitely shaped his opinion to an extent here.
Sebastian Telfair’s NBA Career
Telfair was one of the best high school players of his time, but his NBA career didn’t quite live up to the hype. He entered the league straight out of high school and was selected with the 13th pick of the 2004 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers.
He didn’t make much impact in his first two seasons in the league and the Trail Blazers traded him to the Boston Celtics in 2006. Another lackluster season followed, after which Telfair was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2007. It was in Minnesota, that he would have the best years of his career.
In his two seasons with the franchise from 2007 to 2009, he averaged 9.6 points, 1.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. Those two campaigns would prove to be the high point of his career, however.
The Timberwolves traded him to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2009 and they, in turn, traded him to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010. Telfair was then traded back to the Timberwolves but his second stint with them wasn’t quite as impactful as the first.
Pitstops with the Phoenix Suns, Toronto Raptors, and Oklahoma City Thunder followed, after which he was out of the NBA for good in 2014. He finished with career averages of 7.4 points, 1.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 0.7 steals per game.
