- Gilgeous-Alexander took his bronze medal at the FIBA World Cup with him
- Shai wanted to bring some happiness to the kids and his pictures with them went viral
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander gave kids at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto a day they will never forget. Fresh off of leading Canada to the bronze medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, Shai spent some quality time with the kids, who were delighted to see him.
“First medal for my country so I had to bring it back… the kids give me so much joy and happiness, how am I the one that’s giving back?”
The 25-year-old definitely gave those kids joy and happiness by partnering with the Sick Kids Foundation for this visit. The children had a whole lot of questions to ask, and Gilgeous-Alexander also had some one-on-one meet-and-greet sessions.
He showed all of them that precious bronze medal, the first that Canada had ever won at the World Cup. Shai signed autographs and took pictures with everyone in what would have been an unforgettable experience for them.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Excelled At The FIBA World Cup
Canada entered the FIBA World Cup with high expectations, but they had never finished higher than sixth in the tournament. Gilgeous-Alexander ensured that would change with some spectacular displays.
He averaged 24.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game to be named into the All-Tournament Team. Shai scored 31 points against Slovenia in the quarters to get Canada into the semifinals for the first time but then had a bit of a down game as Serbia eliminated them.
That set up a heavyweight clash in the third-place game against Team USA, and Gilgeous-Alexander made amends for that display against Serbia in style. He had 31 points, 6 rebounds, 12 assists, and a block as Canada won 127-118 in overtime to get the bronze.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander And The Thunder Look Set For A Big 2023-24 Season
Shai will soon be back in action with the Oklahoma City Thunder and for the first time in a while, there are some expectations on the franchise. The Thunder surprisingly finished with a 40-42 record in 2022-23 and were just one win away from making the playoffs, as they lost in the final play-in game to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Gilgeous-Alexander was the biggest reason they made it that far, averaging 31.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game. His efforts were deservingly rewarded with a spot on the All-NBA First Team, and he is now on the verge of firmly establishing himself as one of the very best players in the league.
Luka Doncic thinks Gilgeous-Alexander is already one of the best in the world, and he’ll now be looking to lead OKC to new heights. To assist him in that quest, the Thunder also have the likes of Josh Giddey, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren among their ranks.
They just seem like a team that is primed to take a big leap in this upcoming season, and I can certainly see them making the playoffs rather comfortably. It is too soon to be thinking about championships, but in a few years, the Thunder could potentially be in that mix.
