The Charlotte Hornets are a solid young team, led by star point guard LaMelo Ball.

Coach James Borrego has recently been fired by the Charlotte Hornets. While Borrego has increased the team’s win total each season since the 2019-20 season, it is clear that he wasn’t the right coach to move forward and get them to the playoffs and eventually the championship.

Shams Charania has recently revealed that Michael Jordan was the “ultimate decision maker” that ended up firing James Borrego. It seems as though one of the reasons for Borrego’s dismissal was trying to help the team improve on the defensive end.

I would look at their last two play-in performances. Last year they have a blowout loss to Indiana. This year they have a blowout loss to Atlanta.

I think the more that franchise looked internally, I’m told what was a priority was accountability. Holding the young players, holding that locker room accountable for defense specifically.

This was a team that has always been under James Borrego one of the best offensive teams. They lagged behind on defense, year after year… The ultimate decision maker in Charlotte that got James Borrego fired I’m told, Michael Jordan… the front office had meetings with Michael Jordan this week, and it was determined by Jordan that they were going to move on, get off of James Borrego, and now they’ll have a coaching search.

There’s no doubt that this was the right move for the franchise. While the team’s win total did increase year after year, ultimately, James Borrego didn’t get the results that the team wanted, as the Hornets did not end up making the postseason.

Hopefully, the Charlotte Hornets improve as a defensive team under their future head coach. Perhaps a different coach can get the best out of their young players, and it remains to be seen who the Hornets will settle on.
