The Dallas Mavericks are in a total free-fall in the Western Conference, and their struggle shave become one of the biggest stories of the season. Besides the attention that comes with failure, the Mavericks are also at risk of losing the star they gave up so much to get just a few months ago.
But according to NBA Insider Shams Charania, the Mavericks remain committed to the Kyrie/Luka duo and have made it their priority to re-sign Irving and rebuild around their star core.
“They gave up two starters, a first-round draft pick, and multiple seconds for Kyrie. To not bring him back would be so much more devastating to that organization than bringing him back,” Shams said. “The feeling that you would have if Irving walks to Phoenix or another organization and you don’t get anything back for him, there’s no such thing for the Mavericks as ‘let’s see how life is with no Kyrie Irving.’ Because at that point, you reach rock bottom, and you have to look into re-building because there’s no way to maximize that roster hold and that money from a financial perspective. I still believe the Mavericks’ first and foremost priority this offseason is bringing back Kyrie Irving on a deal… you have to try to rebuild this team around those 2 guys.”
While Kyrie is flawed in many ways (both on and off the court), the Mavericks don’t have much of a choice but to try their best to bring him back. He isn’t the defender the team needs, but his offensive skills are necessary to keep the Mavericks at least somewhat relevant.
But if he leaves for nothing this summer, it could turn into the worst-case scenario for the Mavericks.
2023 Offseason Could Dictate Luka’s Future In Dallas
Needless to say, a lot is riding on this summer and what the Mavs will be able to do to fix the roster. Depending on how they handle the Kyrie situation, Luka’s feelings toward the franchise could turn sour.
“If they let him walk, Luka Doncic will be left wondering if his front office is ever going to deliver the supporting cast he needs,” wrote Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes. “From there, it’s not hard to envision him becoming the next disgruntled star to seek a trade.”
An 11th-place finish is not what anybody had in mind when the Mavericks went all-in for Irving, but it’s where they stand now as the result of an undersized and one-sided roster.
These next few months will be key for Dallas as they attempt to salvage the situation and turn their fortunes around.
