Shaquille O’Neal’s larger-than-life persona extended beyond his dominance on the basketball court; it also included his ability to influence team dynamics and even roster decisions. The story of how he got his teammate Terry Catledge traded after a dispute of $50,000 over jersey number 33 exemplifies Shaq’s assertiveness and impact within the Orlando Magic organization.

“When I first got to Orlando, Terry Catledge was like, ‘You’re gonna have to pay me.’ ‘Bro, I’m not paying you; I’m cool.’ He was arrogant about it. He said, ‘Oh yeah, you can have it. But you gonna have to buy it. Young fella, making all that money.'”

“And he was traded during the middle of the season. The statue of limitation’s up now. Yeah, I did that, Terry Catledge. That was all me.”

Shaq wasn’t going to pay Terry Catledge 🤣

When O’Neal joined the Magic, he expressed a desire to wear jersey number 33, which was already assigned to veteran forward Terry Catledge. However, Catledge refused to relinquish the number unless Shaq paid him a hefty sum of $50,000—an offer the rookie promptly dismissed. Despite attempts to negotiate, Catledge remained adamant, leading to a standoff between the two players.

Unwilling to back down, O’Neal ultimately got his wish when Catledge was traded in the middle of the season. Reflecting on the incident, Shaq openly admitted his role in orchestrating the trade, acknowledging that he played a significant part in Catledge’s departure from the team.

Terry Catledge, who had been a key contributor to the Magic prior to O’Neal’s arrival, found himself at odds with the prized rookie over the jersey number issue. Despite Catledge’s refusal to yield, Shaq’s influence within the organization proved to be decisive, resulting in the veteran forward being traded away.

The episode underscores Shaquille O’Neal’s stature within the NBA as a dominant force both on and off the court. His willingness to assert himself and pursue what he wanted, even if it meant impacting a teammate’s tenure with the team, exemplifies his unwavering determination and drive to succeed.

While the incident may have been controversial at the time, it is now viewed as a testament to Shaq’s immense presence and influence during his tenure with the Orlando Magic—a period marked by both on-court success and off-court drama.

Orlando Magic Were Never Going To Choose Terry Catledge Over Shaquille O’Neal

The decision to trade Terry Catledge in favor of retaining Shaquille O’Neal during their time with the Orlando Magic was a no-brainer for the franchise. While Catledge had been a solid contributor to the team before O’Neal’s arrival, Shaq’s potential and impact on the court were simply too significant to overlook.

Terry Catledge, a veteran forward, had played commendably for the Magic, averaging a career-high 19.4 points per game in his first season with the team. Over the next two seasons, he maintained solid production, contributing 14.7 points per contest. Catledge’s contributions were valuable, but they paled in comparison to the promise and dominance that Shaquille O’Neal brought to the table.

Shaq, from the moment he stepped onto the court as a rookie, showcased unparalleled talent and athleticism. His imposing presence in the paint, combined with his scoring ability and defensive prowess, immediately transformed the Magic’s fortunes. In his debut season, O’Neal averaged an impressive 23.4 points, 13.9 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game, instantly establishing himself as one of the most dominant forces in the league.

Beyond his on-court performance, Shaq’s star power and marketability made him a franchise cornerstone. His charisma and larger-than-life persona brought unprecedented attention and excitement to the Orlando Magic, elevating the team’s profile and attracting fans worldwide.

Given Shaquille O’Neal’s immense potential and impact on and off the court, the Orlando Magic were never going to prioritize retaining Terry Catledge over their prized rookie. While Catledge had been a valuable contributor, Shaq represented the future of the franchise—a transcendent talent poised to lead the team to new heights.

Thus, the decision to trade Catledge in favor of investing in Shaq’s development and potential for long-term success was a logical and inevitable choice for the Magic organization.
