The Ja Morant gun incident has been all over the news as of late, as many are waiting to see what punishment he receives for flashing a gun during an Instagram Live stream.
Amidst the incident, analyst Stephen A. Smith called out Ja Morant’s father Tee, reminding him that he is supposed to be a father, rather than a friend to his son, citing an incident where Tee Morant got involved in an altercation also featuring Memphis Grizzlies players and Shannon Sharpe in Los Angeles.
“To his dad, I would say to him sir, love and respect to you, love seeing you at the games, I would remind you sir, you are his daddy, you are not his boy,” said Smith. “The reality of the situation is that on far too many occasions… remember when there was the altercation at the Staples Center involving Shannon Sharpe? His dad ended up in the middle of that. You see his boys, I’ve seen some of these brothers. Good brothers as far as I’m concerned – they love their brother, Ja Morant. My advice to y’all: protect the asset.”
Obviously, there are times when parents have to discipline their children. However, Ja Morant is also an adult that can make his own decisions. With that being said, Morant is still on the younger side, and perhaps this incident is simply a sign of immaturity more than anything.
Ja Morant has averaged 27.1 PPG, 6.0 RPG, and 8.2 APG for the Memphis Grizzlies this season. The young superstar was having one of his best seasons ever prior to this incident, and we’ll see how his career unfolds going forward.
There Is No Timetable For Ja Morant’s Return
As of right now, there is not a lot of clarity about what a punishment from the league or the team will look like for Ja Morant. Recently, Taylor Jenkins revealed that there is no timetable for the point guard’s return.
“Very tough moment. Everyone knows I’m not going to comment on internal conversations we’ve had as a team with Ja, we’ve had as a leadership group. We love him, we want what’s best for him. It’s going to be a difficult process but we’ve got a great group to get through this… The focus right now is to make sure Ja gets the help he needs to get into a better place, generally speaking, but on the flip side, embrace responsibilities and expectations as a member of this team. That’s what we’re dialoguing about, we’re going to be supportive but we’re going to hold him accountable as well… There’s no definitive timeline. We’ve said it’ll be at least 2 games but we’re taking it one day at a time. This is going to be an ongoing healing process so I can’t comment on what the exact timetable will be because this is not a timetable situation”
Aside from the punishment that will potentially be dealt by the league and the Grizzlies, Ja Morant could also face legal issues. A recent report revealed that Colorado Police have already started an investigation into the point guard.
Hopefully, we see this incident become a learning moment for Ja Morant. He has the opportunity to come out of this a better person, and we’ll see what ends up happening in the future.
