Stephen A. Smith has some dampening news when he shared his two cents on reports of ESPN bracing for layoffs in the days to come.

“Have you all been paying attention to the business landscape?” Smith said on his K[no]w Mercy Podcast. Disney itself announced that over 7,000 employees are going to be let go. ESPN is under the Disney umbrella. They’re going to have cuts coming. Hell, for all I know, I might be one of them. Now I doubt that. But it’s possible. No one knows.”

Per Front Office Sports, the sports site that falls under Disney, as Smith explained will fall under corporate restructuring and that meant that the group was reportedly cutting off 7,000 jobs and $5.5 billion in costs. The report also added that the layoffs could “amount to 3% of Disney’s global workforce.”

Smith has been one of the more household names when talking sports and has been a longtime ESPN man working with different facets of the organization. He was part of their radio segment and even served as an analyst and a host for some of their shows. He is currently one of the hosts of ESPN’s First Take.

It’s unlikely that the sports network will do away with someone of Smith’s caliber. He has been known for his in-depth analysis and his style of delivery that’s enthralled the audience for years now.

Stephen A. Smith Wants To Take Jimmy Kimmel’s Late TV Show

His future at ESPN may be hanging in the balance, but there’s no doubt that Smith has alternatives lined up. Quite recently, the TV personality expressed his desire to take Jimmy Kimmel’s late show.

Speaking to Sean Hannity on Fox News, “I am interested in doing late night,” he said. “I would love to be the heir apparent to Jimmy Kimmel. I believe I could do it. I would throw everybody for a loop, my politics would throw people off because I’d be fair to everybody and I’d listen to everybody. It wouldn’t be one-sided, I’m not a one-sided kind of guy. I’m one-sided on issues, I’m not one-sided on ideology.”

Note that he has already had a stint on the show when he filled in for Kimmel once in 2021. Quite recently, Smith had a cameo appearance on Michael B. Jordan’s ‘Creed III’.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise if Smith will find takers from other TV networks if ESPN does indeed ask him to call it a day at the office. The man has the gift of the gab, and his astute knowledge of basketball makes him a must-have in any network keen to garner an audience.
