As Ja Morant works on his path back to action, the NBA will likely keep investigating the details of his conduct off the court. So far, they haven’t found anything worthy of a major punishment, but that could change on a whim.
Unfortunately for Morant, however, the NBA has ways of finding out what he’s been up to. Speaking on his podcast ‘Know Mercy,’ ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith sent a warning out to Ja and any other “problematic” players about the kind of intel the league has access to.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve been covering the NBA for almost 30 years. I’m not asking you, I’m telling you. On the NBA’s payroll they’ve got off-duty police officers, FBI agents, DEA. They know everything. They know where you live, they know where your boys live, what girls you mess with, and whether you are doing weed or something more. They know whether or not you have a proclivity for strippers and strip clubs. They know everything!”
I've said it before and I'll say it again: The NBA knows EVERYTHING.
They have off-duty police officers, FBI agents, DEA. They know where you live, what girls you mess with, whether you are doing weed. EVERYTHING.

The NBA is a billion-dollar business and it makes sense that it’d go to whatever lengths it can to protect the brand and integrity of the players. When young players get drafted and agree to join the association, they are agreeing to follow the NBA’s rules, which include both on-court and off-court activities.
In the case of Ja Morant and his recent string of reckless behavior, the NBA is no doubt more informed than anyone else. They know what Ja’s been up to and had time to prepare for the fallout that followed after the details finally came to light.
Will The NBA Take Action Against Ja Morant?
Despite widespread criticism of the Morant situation, the NBA has been eerily silent throughout the ordeal. While the Grizzlies organization has been working with Ja on a path to returning to the team, Adam Silver and the league office have not said or done anything at all.
The whole thing is a bad look for the NBA, but it’s ultimately Morant himself who stands the most to lose from all of this, and just because the league let him off easy this time doesn’t mean they won’t come down hard the next time.
“You are a superstar,” said Stephen A. “You got a deal that kicks in next year that could exceed $231 million over the next five years. And on this show, on national television, is you associated with police. Think about that for a second. And then ask yourself, is it really, really worth it? You know the answer to that, bro. It’s not worth it.”
