The 2016 NBA Finals are forever etched in the memories of fans. LeBron James led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 3-1 comeback against Stephen Curry and the 73-9 Golden State Warriors.
During Game 7 of the series, the Warriors were down 89-92, and Curry had a chance to tie the game with a three-point shot. Kevin Love played great defense against Stephen Curry, which ultimately won the game for the Cavs. However, Curry admitted that he rushed his three-point attempt with 33.3 seconds left on the clock.
“It’s an uneasy feeling,” Curry said of letting the pressure get the better of him, per ESPN. “And it happens fast. It’s not a steady progression. I experience it when I’m in the locker room, preparing to get locked in for a big game. Because it matters so much. It’s cliche, but if you aren’t nervous, it doesn’t matter enough to you.”
Steph added: “When I was younger and got into those types of situations, it made me rush, play fast. With experience, you figure out ways to slow the game down.”
Curry then explained his thought process behind taking a rushed three-point shot.
“I’m like, ‘I just need a little space’ and that’s where I started to rush,” he said. “I look back and think I could have easily gone around [Love] and gotten a 2, and we could have gotten a stop, and then I could come back down and hit another shot, and we win another championship, instead of me going for the hero shot, which I felt like I could make. That was a shot where I was not under control. And it cost us a championship.”
“Don’t ever make the mistake of rushing like that again,” Curry concluded.
The final score of the game was at 93-89 in favor of the Cavaliers. They became the first team in the NBA Finals history to overcome a 3-1 deficit and won the series 4-3. The Cavs did so against the team with the best regular season record in the history of the league.
While it was a day of massive celebration for the Cavaliers, Curry and the Warriors suffered in agony after blowing a 3-1 lead.
Stephen Curry’s Honest Opinion About The 2016 NBA Finals
Stephen Curry has won four NBA Championships in his career and three of them have come against the Cavaliers. But losing in 2016 is something that he’ll never forget.
Despite that, Steph hasn’t made an excuse for his team’s performance. If anything, he believes the Cavaliers were simply the better team in the 2016 NBA Finals.
“2016 was, you know, just an up and down crazy playoffs run, Finals. In the Finals, I think the wheels fell off and Kyrie and LeBron played unbelievable for three straight games. I don’t think people talk about that part of it as much, it’s always like we all suck.
“We got beat, we didn’t lose. We got beat. So at the end of the day, when we all hosting our own podcast, and when I look across the room and see Kyrie and LeBron and Kawhi and Kyle Lowry, I’d be like, ‘Yo, that was fun as hell, bro.'”
Steph gave LeBron and Kyrie their flowers for an amazing series. James averaged 29.7 PPG, 11.3 RPG, and 8.9 APG as he won the third NBA Finals MVP of his career. On the other hand, Kyrie had 27.1 PPG, 3.9 RPG, and 3.9 APG vs. the Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals.
