• Stephen Curry will turn 36 years old by the end of the 2023-24 season
• Curry addressed how long he’ll play for on Gilbert Arenas’ podcast
• Steph will definitely play out the three years on his current contract before making a decision
Stephen Curry is entering his 15th NBA season at the age of 35, meaning Curry has already enjoyed a lengthy and successful career. But his skill set is one that could allow him to play into his forties with ease. Even though retirement is still a few years off, it’s definitely peering over the horizon for Curry, who addressed it while talking to Gilbert Arenas.
“I never imagined myself being the forty-plus dude trying to hold on for dear life. But who knows what my body will look like or feel like at that point? I have three years left on my deal, including this year, and then kind of figure it out from there… I don’t put too much of a timeline outside of my contract now just knowing that will give me 38 and 17 years in the league. I ain’t skipping out to go play golf just yet.”
Curry’s shooting ability makes it seem like he could, theoretically, have an extended career. But one of the primary ways Curry uses his devastating shot to be successful is through relentless off-ball movement.
He isn’t a spring chicken, as we saw in the 2023 playoffs, where Curry looked unable to get off his own shot. He averaged 26.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game on 43.3% shooting in that series loss, which are strong numbers but proved that Curry can be stopped.
The Warriors Big Three In 2023
Given the careers they’ve had, you could make an argument that Draymond Green and Klay Thompson could retire before Curry. Green’s physical decline has caused his role to decline, even though he’s arguably still the best defender on the Warriors.
Klay cannot guard players like he did before, and his 16.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game on 34.3% shooting in their playoff elimination to the Lakers shows that there’s a clear decline in his abilities as well. Regardless of what happens, it’s unlikely this trio will break up.
They are perfectly complementary to each other and had plenty of great moments throughout the season. Draymond was one of the best defenders in the NBA, Klay carried the franchise to wins when Curry was out hurt, and Steph dominated whenever he needed to. Hopefully, all three can retire with the franchise that drafted them.
