With Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green leading the way, the Golden State Warriors have formed one of the greatest dynasties in NBA history. They won four championships in an eight-year period from 2015 to 2022, but it seemed like the end could be near for them as a group as we entered the offseason.
While Curry is under contract till 2025-26, the futures of both Green and Thompson were up in the air. Draymond ended speculation about his future by signing a four-year deal, but Klay is set to be a free agent in 2024. When talking about Thompson’s extension, Warriors owner Joe Lacob stated he wants the trio to retire with them.
“Certainly, we’d like Steph, Draymond, and Klay to retire as Warriors,” Lacob told The Mercury News. “That is my goal, our goal, and I think it’s a good likelihood that’ll happen.”
Lacob seems intent on ensuring that all three of them stay with the team. The new CBA made keeping all of them difficult for the Warriors, but with Green signing a relatively team-friendly deal and Jordan Poole being traded, they should be able to re-sign Klay.
Shams Charania reported that the Warriors want him to accept a pay cut , though, but Adrian Wojnarowski indicated Klay is expecting a max contract. Thompson averaged 21.9 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 2.4 APG, 0.7 SPG, and 0.4 BPG last season, and it’ll be interesting to see how this situation pans out.
Joe Lacob Spoke On Steve Kerr’s Future Too
Klay isn’t the only key member of the Warriors who is out of contract next year as things stand. Head coach Steve Kerr is entering the final year of his deal as well, and Lacob stated during this interview that he’s confident they’ll retain him.
“We’ll have those discussions I’m sure soon,” Lacob said. “Steve loves being coach of the Warriors, I love Steve, we love Steve and I’m sure we’ll figure something out.”
Wojnarowski had reported that people around the league expect Kerr to ask for a deal worth around $20 million per year and added that his situation is one to keep an eye on. Spending a ton of money has never been a problem for Lacob, so if push comes to shove, you’d expect him to get this done.
