It has been a while now since the Golden State Warriors traded for Chris Paul, but it still seems a bit weird to think of him on the team. He has spent much of the last decade competing against Stephen Curry and the Warriors but is now aiming to help them win another championship.
When Curry, who has had so many epic battles with Paul, was asked about the future Hall-of-Famer now being his teammate, he called it a surreal feeling.
“It’s the most surreal thing in the world,” Curry told Sports Illustrated. “Because he was big brother and he is big brother in the sense that when I was coming up as a rookie, he showed me the ropes. And you go into battling for playoff position and championships and all that and there is a lot of history. He’s in year 18, I’m in year 15 just amazing that we get to do it together now. I’m gonna enjoy the ride.”
Being the competitors that they have always been, they were going to go at each other in order to win, but now as teammates, all of that has been put behind them.
Paul, who averaged 13.9 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 8.9 APG, 1.5 SPG, and 0.4 BPG last season, also explained how the two of them go way back with each other and that he is excited to team up with Curry.
Will The Chris Paul Experiment Work For The Warriors?
To say many are skeptical about Paul fitting in well with the Warriors might be an understatement. His slow methodical way of playing is in stark contrast to the Warriors’ basketball philosophy of quick ball movement and playing at a high pace.
The only way you’d think it could work is if Paul comes off the bench and runs the offense for the second unit. The Warriors always struggle when Curry isn’t on the court, but Paul can help generate offense in his absence and ensure the team stays afloat.
The problem with that, though is that he doesn’t seem all that keen on coming off the bench. It was reported he is hopeful he can start alongside Curry and Klay Thompson, but it’s hard to see that happening as of now. The Warriors are probably going to have to find a way to convince him to accept this bench role, and that is not going to be easy.
