The All-Star has drawn comparisons to legends such as Kobe Bryant, so he is on the right track, although leading the Suns into the playoffs for another Finals run could elevate his status even more.

Norman Powell drafted No. 46 overall by the Milwaukee Bucks and later traded to the Toronto Raptors, has transformed himself into an impactful and versatile forward. Known for his athleticism and high-flying dunks, Powell has gradually developed into a reliable scorer and valuable contributor. The 2019 NBA champion can be a go-to scorer and defender off the bench or in the starting lineup, and he will have a critical role going forward with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Kristaps Porzingis entered the league with immense potential as a skilled and agile big man. Even with doubts about his maturity levels, the big man is a 2-time All-Star and will only get better with time. Averaging over 39% from three also means he is one of the best shooting bigs ever, if not the best.

2016 NBA Draft Class

Ben Simmons is on the target list for most NBA fans and the media for his putrid performances last season and his inability to shoot a jumper, but he would still be taken as the starting point guard out of the 2016 NBA Draft behind Jamal Murray. Simmons is one of the best defensive players in the world when he is focused and he has plenty of time to get back to his 3-time All-Star status at 26 years old. The Australian might never reach his true potential, but he can at least become an All-Star again.

Jamal Murray proved to be one of the best point guards in the world this season after averaging 26.1 PPG on 39.6% 3-PT FG in the playoffs for the Denver Nuggets. The Canadian can stroke the ball from deep, attack the rim, and also set up plays for his teammates. As Nikola Jokic’s sidekick, Murray has done more than a splendid job leading the Nuggets into contention year after year. No doubt, he has been the best point guard out of his draft class.

Jaylen Brown has developed into a versatile two-way forward, known for his athleticism, defensive prowess, and improved scoring ability. The 2-time All-Star has consistently improved his scoring since his rookie season as he can score from all levels, wi a reliable mid-range jumper and an ability to finish strong at the rim. He posted a career-high 26.6 PPG this past season, which means he is a strong candidate to earn a supermax extension.

Brandon Ingram was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, selected by the Los Angeles Lakers. Since then, he has made significant strides in his game and has earned his first All-Star selection as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans. The forward has won the Most Improved Player award in the 2019-20 season and continues to be a franchise cornerstone for the Pelicans. If Ingram can continue improving his all-around game, he will start drawing comparisons again to the far more elite Kevin Durant.

Domantas Sabonis was selected No. 11 overall by the Orlando Magic and was later traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2016 NBA Draft. He now plays for the Sacramento Kings as a highly skilled big man with an exceptional basketball IQ. He’s an excellent passer for his position and has great footwork, making him effective in the low post. Sabonis has emerged as one of the Pacers’ key players, leading the team in various statistical categories and playing a vital role in their success.

2017 NBA Draft Class

De’Aaron Fox is known for his incredible speed and agility, which allows him to blow past defenders and get to the rim with ease. Fox has shown leadership qualities on the court, guiding the Sacramento Kings and becoming one of their key franchise players. This past season, the speedy point guard posted a career-high 25.0 PPG along with dynamic center Domantas Sabonis.

Donovan Mitchell burst onto the scene as a rookie with his scoring ability and has since established himself as one of the league’s top-scoring guards. He has a knack for scoring in various ways, from driving to the basket to shooting from long range. Mitchell is, without a doubt, the best shooting guard out of his draft and already has a 71-point performance under his belt to go along with four All-Star appearances.

There is no doubt that Jayson Tatum is the best player in the 2017 NBA Draft. The forward has developed into a top-10 player in the world this past season, posting a career-high 30.1 PPG on 46.6% FG, 35.0% 3-PT FG, and 85.4% FT. Boston’s franchise star has a chance to be the face of the NBA in the future and as he continues to improve his decision-making and clutch shooting, there is no limit to what he can do.

Lauri Markkanen was an afterthought until he got his chance to show what he can do with the Utah Jazz this season. The Finnish star made his first All-Star selection in 2023, posting 25.6 PPG and 8.6 RPG while nailing 39.1% of his three-pointers. Markkanen is not only an efficient scorer and rebounder, but his shot-blocking potential is also there to see. As he continues to improve, Markkanen will be a standout player from his draft class.

Finally, at center, Bam Adebayo is a defensive anchor for the Miami Heat, known for his shot-blocking, rim protection, and versatility to guard multiple positions. At the same time, he is an excellent passing big man, capable of facilitating the offense from the high post and making plays for his teammates. Even if Jimmy Butler and Erik Spoelstra get the bulk of the credit for Miami’s two Finals appearances over the past four seasons, Adebayo’s impact is just as great, which is why he is untouchable.

2018 NBA Draft Class

The 2018 NBA Draft is widely regarded as one of the most talent-rich drafts in recent memory, and Trae Young is a part of that. This past season, Young posted 26.2 PPG and 10.2 APG for the Atlanta Hawks.

Luka Doncic can play any position he desires, but he has been a guard for the past few seasons. The Slovenian is an incredibly versatile player with the ability to impact the game in multiple ways. He can score, rebound, and facilitate at an elite level and is constantly in the MVP conversation as a result. With off-the-charts basketball IQ and leadership already at a young age, Doncic is the major contender for being the face of the NBA going forward.

Despite being a guard naturally, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is known for his well-rounded game, excelling both offensively and defensively. He can score efficiently and also guard multiple positions effectively, which means he has to be included in the starting lineup. Shai has shown consistent growth in his skills and production each season, making him a key building block for the Oklahoma City Thunder’s future.

At the first forward spot, Jaren Jackson Jr. is a standout defensive player, particularly as a shot-blocker and rim protector. His presence alters opponents’ shots and helps anchor his team’s defense. The big man’s ability to stretch the floor as a big man makes him a valuable asset on offense, creating space for his teammates and adding versatility to the team’s lineup. Being one of the younger players in the draft, Jackson has considerable upside and potential for further development as a possible superstar player.

Finally, despite the criticism he faces, Deandre Ayton is a dominant force in the paint, known for his scoring ability around the rim and finishing skills. He is an excellent rebounder on both ends of the floor, securing crucial second-chance opportunities for his team. Ayton has also been a pivotal factor in Phoenix’s runs in the playoffs over the past few seasons. Remember, he was a former No. 1 overall pick.

2019 NBA Draft Class

The most exciting player in the NBA, Morant possesses a diverse scoring arsenal, with the capability to finish acrobatic layups at the rim and shoot efficiently from mid-range and beyond the arc. Hopefully, the young man gets his act together because his potential is through the roof.

Darius Garland is a skilled scorer, particularly adept at shooting from the outside. He has a quick release and the ability to create his own shot off the dribble. Garland has shown improvements in his playmaking ability, becoming. As one of the younger players in the draft, Garland has substantial room for growth and development, promising a bright future even if he has already made an All-Star Team as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

A quick-fire shooter, Tyler Herro is renowned for his scoring ability, especially as a three-point shooter. He possesses a quick release and the confidence to take and make difficult shots even if he is under 25 years old. The All-Star has demonstrated exceptional fearlessness and clutch performances, notably during the Miami Heat’s playoff run in the 2020 NBA Playoffs.

Keldon Johnson is a versatile forward who impacts the game in multiple ways. He can score, rebound, defend, and bring energy to the court. Thanks to Gregg Popovich’s teachings, Johnson is also a tenacious defender, capable of guarding multiple positions and disrupting opponents’ plays. As a young player, Keldon Johnson has shown significant promise and development since entering the league.

Finally, the most spectacular name in the draft, Zion Williamson, occupies the final spot. Williamson is an incredibly dominant forward, known for his exceptional athleticism, strength, and explosiveness. He is a prolific scorer around the rim and a dominant rebounder, making two All-Star Teams already. Zion’s unique combination of size, athleticism, and skillset has led many to believe he has the potential to become a generational superstar in the NBA if he can just stay healthy and in proper shape.

2020 NBA Draft Class

Center: James Wiseman

LaMelo Ball is an exceptional playmaker with exceptional court vision and passing skills. He has the ability to thread the needle and create scoring opportunities for his teammates, which is why he is already an All-Star playmaker. Despite being a guard, Ball is also an impressive rebounder, often grabbing boards at a high rate for his position. For his career, Ball is averaging 19.4 PPG, 6.4 RPG, and 8.4 APG, which means he could be a superstar very soon.

At the other guard spot is Tyrese Haliburton. The former No. 12 overall pick is known for his high basketball IQ, making him a smart and efficient player on both ends of the floor. Similar to Ball, Haliburton is an excellent passer, capable of setting up his teammates with well-timed and accurate passes. He had a breakout season in 2022-23, posting 20.7 PPG and 10.4 APG for the Indiana Pacers.

At the first forward spot, Anthony Edwards is a dynamic scorer, known for his athleticism and ability to score from all levels. He can attack the rim with authority and has a reliable jump shot. His confidence is already through the roof, but he continues to be a spectacular offensive player who can create his own shot and, with time, include playmaking, defense, and rebounding skills. The man in Minnesota, Edwards, has a very bright future, and his potential is there to see for anyone who follows professional basketball.

At the other spot is Desmond Bane, an elite sharpshooter from beyond the arc. Armed with a smooth stroke and the ability to knock down shots consistently, Bane is arguably the second-best player on the Memphis Grizzlies behind Ja Morant. The swingman is also a solid defender, capable of guarding multiple positions on the perimeter. An All-Star in the making, Bane is an untouchable piece on the Grizzlies roster.

Amazingly, the 2020 NBA Draft is devoid of any legitimate centers worthy of mention. Even if he has struggled with injuries, James Wiseman is a promising center. Wiseman possesses excellent athleticism and size for a center, making him a force in the paint on both ends of the floor. He is an impressive shot-blocker, and as a young and raw prospect, Wiseman has room for development and could become a dominant presence in the paint if given time and patience.

2021 NBA Draft Class

Starting Lineup:

Guard: Cade Cunningham

Guard: Josh Giddey

Forward: Franz Wagner

Forward: Scottie Barnes

Center: Evan Mobley

The actual No. 1 overall pick in 2021, Cade Cunningham, is a highly versatile player who can play both guard positions with elite proficiency. He has the size, ball-handling, and scoring ability to be an offensive threat from multiple spots on the floor. He is an exceptional playmaker with excellent court vision and passing skills and will be on his way to being an All-Star soon, holding career averages of 17.8 PPG, 5.6 RPG, and 5.6 APG.

Josh Giddey is an outstanding playmaker and passer, similar to Cade Cunningham. Despite being a tall guard, he has great court vision and can make precise passes in transition and the half-court. Standing 6’8”, Giddey is an impressive rebounder for his position, which adds an extra dimension to his game and allows him to initiate fast breaks. As one of the youngest players in the draft, Giddey has plenty of room for growth and development in the NBA.

One of the most unexpectedly solid players coming out of the 2021 Draft, Franz Wagner, is developing nicely in Orlando with the Magic. Wagner’s high basketball IQ enables him to make smart decisions on both ends of the floor, leading to efficient play. Of course, he is a capable shooter and scorer, and with continued development, he can become a reliable offensive threat.

The 2021 Rookie of the Year, Scottie Barnes, is a highly versatile forward who can play multiple positions. He possesses a unique skill set that allows him to contribute in various ways, including being an outstanding defender, known for his ability to guard multiple positions and create havoc on the defensive end. He is also a very capable scorer and passer, averaging a career 15.3 PPG, 7.1 RPG, and 4.2 APG for the Toronto Raptors.

The best center to come out of the draft, Evan Mobley is a dominant defensive player with excellent shot-blocking and rim-protection skills. He can anchor a team’s defense and alter opponents’ shots in the paint. The youngster is also skilled on the offensive end, with a soft touch around the rim and the ability to shoot from mid-range. After making the 2022-23 All-Defensive Team, Mobley will be an All-Star soon and that is a near guarantee. 

2022 NBA Draft Class

Starting Lineup:

Guard: Jaden Ivey

Guard: Shaedon Sharpe

Forward: Keegan Murray

Forward: Paolo Banchero

Center: Chet Holmgren

Jaden Ivey was taken No. 5 overall in the 2022 NBA Draft and he has been a spectacular player for the Detroit Pistons in his rookie campaign. Averaging 16.3 PPG, 3.9 RPG, and 5.2 APG, Ivey played 74 games in his first season and proved to be the best point guard out of the draft. Detroit has some nice young players, including Cade Cunningham, and Ivey fits well in the backcourt for the long term.

Shaedon Sharpe was one of the few bright spots for the Portland Trail Blazers this season, posting 9.9 PPG and 3.0 RPG as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2022 Draft. While Sharpe’s numbers aren’t spectacular by any means, they are solid and his play was enough evidence that he will be a starting guard someday. If Portland does trade Damian Lillard, Sharpe will be the franchise cornerstone alongside Anfernee Simons.

Keegan Murray was good enough to help the Sacramento Kings make the playoffs and that means he takes the edge over Jabari Parker Jr at the first forward spot. Murray averaged 12.2 PPG and 4.6 RPG for the Kings this season and as a knockdown shooter and defender, the future is bright for the 22-year-old.

Paolo Banchero was the Rookie of the Year this season and that wasn’t a surprise. He is a very solid go-to scorer and even if his efficiency wasn’t great (42.7% FG, 29.8% 3-PT FG), Banchero averaged 20.0 PPG as a 20-year-old, which isn’t easy to do. Banchero plays like a 5-year veteran already because he has a grown man’s body and the potential to be a consistent double-double threat going forward.

Finally, even if we did not get to see him yet, Chet Holmgren has to be the one selected at center. His potential is too great to ignore and even if Victor Wembanyama is stealing all the news as a “unicorn” center, Holmgren’s name should be mentioned as well. The 7’0” lanky big man has a quick leap to block shots and an all-around game that includes outside shooting. Hopefully, he can stay healthy and prove he is truly a one-of-a-kind center despite his lack of muscle weight.
