In the last 24 hours, the NBA world has been turned upside down, as Damian Lillard, after 11 long years in Portland, finally demanded a trade from the franchise. Lillard has also made it clear to the franchise that he only wants to play for the Miami Heat, teaming up with Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler.
However, it may not be that simple for Damian Lillard. Trail Blazers GM Joe Cronin had a statement that honored the request but emphasized the importance of any deal being good for the team.
In an article by Sam Amick of The Athletic, it is stated that Cronin will not accept any deal from the Heat that isn’t in the best interest of the Portland Trail Blazers.
“But in the early stages of this latest superstar saga, there are strong indications that Cronin won’t settle on a Heat deal if he doesn’t truly believe it’s what’s best for the franchise.”
Lillard will attract interest from a lot of teams, not just the Miami Heat. Initial reports have suggested the Brooklyn Nets have an active interest in bringing Dame in, and they have the assets to make a deal happen. But considering how loyal Lillard has been to the Blazers, there will be an expectation of them to send him where he wants to go.
Where Will Damian Lillard End Up?
Lillard will hope that his future can be sorted out quickly, as a long, drawn-out saga could sour his relationship with the Blazers, and whichever team he ends up on. Dame’s social media activity has suggested that he would like to return after a championship excursion.
The Miami Heat may have to add a third team to the deal in order to bring Dame to South Beach. But considering the talent that Lillard is, they would and should be willing to give up assets in order to land him.
Lillard would make the Heat one of the favorites to win the NBA championship, and he also fits perfectly with their excellent culture. It remains to be seen whether Dame Time comes to Miami this offseason.
