Tyrese Maxey couldn’t hold his tears back at the unveiling of the Maxey Museum by the Philadelphia 76ers after the 23-year-old guard signed a five-year, $240 million extension. He shouted out team leader Joel Embiid for his guidance, fighting back tears while taking Embiid for showing faith in him early during their tenure as teammates.

“Big fella. Thanks for coming, man, I really appreciate it. You were the first person to really believe in me, I keep telling everybody that. Just walking onto the plane, you telling me to sit there, you bringing me a PlayStation, that meant the world to me. I hope I’m not going to let you down.”

Maxey was drafted with the 23rd overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, providing the Sizers with fantastic value as a low first-round pick who’s already emerged as an All-Star. He averaged 25.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 6.2 assists last season, being named to his first All-Star team and missing out on the All-NBA squad by a hair.

The point guard can be a team legend if he spends most of his career here and brings them a title. He may be the team’s third option now behind Embiid and Paul George, but he’s still one of the most influential scorers in the NBA.

Tyrese Maxey Opens Up On The On-Court Fit With Joel Embiid And Paul George

Tyrese Maxey has already reacted to the team signing Paul George, with the trio of PG, Maxey, and Embiid being called the best big three in the NBA because they’re complementary while all play different positions.

Maxey spoke highly of George after the deal was finalized, saying that the sky is the limit with what the pair can achieve together.

“He’s that guy who you can pick up and plug into any system because of his talent. He’s 6’9″. This guy can shoot the ball, rebound the ball, and pass the ball well. Play on the ball, play off the ball, play off hand-offs, playoff transitions. Like, you know, the sky is the limit.”

He highlighted the team’s star as well, calling Embiid the best player in the NBA.

“Having a guy like Joel Embiid, who’s the best player in the league, you have to be able to play off the ball, and you have to be able to play in hand-off games with him. You have to do a lot of different things to be versatile and I think he (George) could do that. I think he could play with the second unit and lead those units as well.”

Finally, Maxey credited Nick Nurse for the phenomenal job he’s done with the 76ers already, with the guard trusting the coach to make the right decisions come mext season.

“We’ll see. That’s Coach Nurse’s job to figure out how we’re going to play. I just go out there and do what Coach Nurse tells me to do. We’ll figure all that out when the time comes. We have a little bit more work to do or whatever and find out who’s going to be on the team, but I think it’ll be great.”

This trio has the potential to win an NBA title in their first year together with a bench where the star sixth man is Kelly Oubre. If Maxey, Embiid, and George come out focused on winning trophies, everyone will likely forget about the issues that plague the franchise at the moment.
