Tyronn Lue is the Head Coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, one of the best in the business. But before he moved into coaching, Lue was also a player in the NBA, putting together a solid 10-year career in the league. And throughout that time, he never forgot where he came from, recently revealing that he has sent his mother and grandmother a check every month since he was drafted in 1998, 25 years ago.
“Had a lot of help along the way,” Tyronn Lue said while talking about being drafted to the NBA. Family, friends, Mexico, who raised me. And I just wanted to get to the point where I could take care of my family. My mom, my grandmother, my sisters, brothers, aunties, uncles.
“When I got drafted, my mom and grandma, they ain’t work another day in their life. They been getting a check for 25 years, every month. So that was a blessing for me, to be able to take care of them. To see where we come from and all the struggles we had, being poor and everything they had to do. My grandmom, my mom man, they can have anything.”

This is a beautiful sentiment from Tyronn Lue. He has achieved a lot as a player and a coach, winning 2 championships with the Lakers before winning one with the Cleveland Cavaliers as the Head Coach. He is one of the league’s most respected names, and it’s easy to see why, Lue is the consummate family man. Even he got some help along the way though.
Ty Lue Explained How Shaquille O’Neal Helped Him Out With $20K In Cash As A Rookie
Tyronn Lue was drafted in a lockout year, meaning he wasn’t getting paid immediately. Considering how he had to take care of his family, that would have been a huge blow, but he got some great help from Shaquille O’Neal along the way.
“The first week I got in town, he took me to the Century Club and I met Shaq the first night. Shaq was like, ‘Man, Glad to have you. Come to the house tomorrow and have a big meal, whatever, whatever.’
“So we go to Shaq’s house the next day, and he gives me $20,000 cash. He’s like, ‘I know you ain’t got no money. I know it’s a lockout. Take care of yourself.’ That kind of helped me out… Shaq just made me feel welcome right away.”
The NBA is a brotherhood, and it is made up of a lot of guys just trying to do right by their families and take care of the people they need to. The lifestyle and the money seem flashy from the outside, but these stories show that there is a lot more substance to it than that. And Tyronn Lue is undoubtedly one of the good ones.
