Los Angeles Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue is leading by example in the locker room by prioritizing his health over everything else. After gaining weight during his time as coach of the Cavaliers, bouts of chest pain led to him realizing he needed to lose weight. Since last summer, Lue has dropped 33 pounds and revealed the process behind it to Andscape

“I’ve been working out. Eating better. I still have my moments. [I’m] Eating less. It’s been good. Daniel has done a good job of staying on me because I can stray away. I’m just doing 20 to 30 minutes per day … “Now I’m about 208 [pounds]. Back [in Cleveland] I was 241. I can’t believe I got that big.”

Lue has been receiving guidance from Clippers Vice President of Medical Maggie Bryant and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Daniel Shapiro. He has a regular exercise plan and also is strict about what he eats, and how often he does it.

“I try to eat once a day, most of the time at 3 o’clock [p.m.] every day and I’ll be good. I’ve trained myself, trained my mind.”

He did reveal he ends up having a snack occasionally but is strict about minimizing how much he eats, especially on game days. The entire story does paint a worrying picture, as Lue’s health deteriorated heavily in 2018 as coach of the Cavaliers before he stepped away from the franchise.

Now leading the Clippers, Lue has realized his players aren’t the only ones who need to stay in good shape. That responsibility falls on him as well, as he suffered with fatigue in Cleveland which all of his players could see.

Tyronn Lue Is Hoping To Lead The Clippers To A Title

Tyronn Lue won an NBA Championship in his first half-season as a head coach with the 2016 Cavaliers. It took him years to prove himself as one of the elite coaches in the league, solidified by his run to the Conference Finals with a heavily injured Clippers roster. He has led a talented team led by Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and James Harden to a 37-20 record this year.

The team has had some struggles recently, falling four games behind the No. 1 seed despite holding the position just a few weeks ago. They blew a 21-point fourth quarter lead last night in a big loss to the Lakers, as Lue’s gameplan failed to limit LeBron James from outscoring his entire team in the fourth quarter.

The responsibility of the job Lue has had in LA has been immense. He took over in the 2020-21 season from Doc Rivers and led the franchise to their first-ever Conference Finals despite an injury-riddled season which was put in the ground when Kawhi tore his ACL in the second round. He did miss the playoffs in 2021-22 with Kawhi missing the entire year and George missing most of the season.

The roster is intact this year, though George has missed the last two games with an injury of which the severity is still unknown. They’ll hope to retain a top-four seed even with George’s absence and make a championship run in their final season playing in the Crypto.com Arena.
