All eyes are on rising star Victor Wembanyama as he continues his breakout season. After 7 up-and-down games so far, the next one may be his biggest yet. Set in Madison Square Garden, Wembanyama will face off for his first game against the Knicks — but according to the young stud himself, his first impressions aren’t what some might have thought ahead of his first game at MSG.

“It’s not as big as I expected but still the vibe is here,” Wemby said, via Bleacher Report.  “I’ve heard from so many people that this is the best basketball gym in the world. I’m eager to find out. I’m definitely expecting some good team and individual performances here.”

Wembanyama has been showing flashes of stardom throughout his tenure so far and he’s sure to put on a show for the fans in New York City. While the jury is still out on just how good he is, Wemby has displayed a level of confidence that should make any Spurs fans feel good about the future. And if he can perform at Madison Square Garden without any trouble, then he can play anywhere else without a problem.

Madison Square Garden Is Where Legends Are Made

On its own, there’s nothing particularly special about MSG. But as the only arena located in the heart of New York City (Pennsylvania Plaza in Manhattan), the venue carries more weight than a typical NBA arena. As the host of thousands of events over the years (from concerts to shows), Madison Square Garden has a reputation that has stretched well beyond the sports industry but there are also countless stories to be told on the court as well.

Among the most memorable nights at MSG include Curry’s 54-point game in 2013, LeBron’s 50+ point masterpiece with the Cavaliers, and Kobe Bryant’s iconic 61-point night back in February of 2009. Something about playing at the Garden brings out the best in some players and we will see soon enough if Wembanyama becomes the latest name to join that list. But as a guy who has already endured so much pressure throughout his young career, he should have no trouble thriving under the spotlight.

Wembanyama Is Rising To The Occasion

There is no doubt that Victor aims to become one of the best players ever, but he’ll have to start winning if he wants to join that conversation. Right now, it’s still too early to say where the Spurs will finish in the West standings but it’s clear they are trending upwards, given what we’ve seen in the first two weeks of the season.

Thanks to players like Keldon Johnson, Zach Collins, and Doug McDermott, Wembanyama hasn’t been alone out there for the Spurs but without a co-star to help back up his play, this team may never catch up to Western elites like the Nuggets, Warriors, and Lakers. For now, though, the Spurs are still actively building their identity as Victor works his way into finding his peak NBA form.
