In a recent chat with the media, Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama was asked what it’s like to be the focus of so much attention. Without any hesitation, Wemby denied that the spotlight was having any impact on him mentally and reminded everyone that he was “built” for this type of hype.
“I noticed that there was a whole lot of cameras on our side,” said Wembanyama. “It just felt funny how I really don’t care. I really don’t pay attention to it. It doesn’t change my routine… I’m built for this, I love the sport, I love being an elite athlete. I’m trying to be amongst the best, and the best always have this kind of attention.”
Cleary, Victor understands what it takes to be the best. Coming in as the best prospect since LeBron James, Wembanyama has been under pressure from the very start and he’s faced it all without issue. At this point in his young career, Victor is saying and doing all the right things, a clear sign that he’s in store for a long and successful career.
The Hype Is Real For Wembanyama
Before Victor even played his first game, he was drawing comparisons to some of the greatest players ever. Standing at 7’4″ with a ridiculous wingspan, Wemby’s obscene height and frame allow him to tower over most other players on the court. What’s special about Victor is that he doesn’t play like a big. Thanks to serviceable ball handling and an impressive stroke from three, Victor can do it all on the court and there are almost no weaknesses to his game.
While it’s still too early to predict what kind of player he will be, Wembanyama is already establishing himself as one of the top faces of the league and his improvement from game to game is proof that he isn’t close to his full potential. If Victor can keep going on this track and deliver on the wild expectations, it could go down as a Hall of Fame career by the time it’s all said and done. For now, he’s just taking it one day at a time and doing his best to become the player that the Spurs need him to be.
Who Is ROTY?
At 7-33 this season, it’s safe to say that the Spurs are out of the NBA playoff race this season. In fact, they are on pace for one of the worst records in modern league history. Even so, Victor deserves credit for his performance so far. Through 35 games this season, Wemby is averaging 19.8 points, 10.1 rebounds, and a league-high 3.1 blocks per game on 46% shooting. Those numbers are good enough to get Victor in the Rookie of the Year conversation, but Thunder big man Chet Holmgren could make things interesting if he heats up down the stretch.
Impressively, Victor is also a candidate for the NBA All-Star roster this season. As a chance to be the first rookie since Blake Griffin to make the team, it’s clear that Victor is a cut above the typical rising star. If he plays his cards right, Wembanyama has a chance to put his name in the history books and he’s prepared for everything that comes with that.
