Rookie Bennedict Mathurin was at the receiving end of a hilarious prank the Indiana Pacers played earlier this week.

Soon after their final regular season game against the New York Knicks, the Pacers landed home and Mathurin walked to his car only to find his entire car covered in plastic.

The Pacers may have missed a playoff berth, finishing 11th in the East with a 35-47 record, but they did give their fans a reason to smile, and some extra work for Mathurin by wrapping up his entire car in plastic.

On the season front, Mathurin had a solid season with the Pacers playing 78 games and averaging 16.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. He shot 43.4 percent from the floor and 32.3 percent from beyond the arc.

He ended as the fourth-highest scorer behind Tyrese Haliburton (20.7 points), Myles Turner (18.0 points), and Buddy Hield (16.8 points). Come to this offseason, Mathurin will no longer be a rookie as he enters his second season with Indiana.

When Bennedict Mathurin Didn’t Know “What Family Was”

In what comes as a heartfelt story about the rookie, Hernan Olaya, a Latin America Academy coach who discovered Mathurin in Canada, recollected the story of how life was hard for the young gun in Mexico and how he couldn’t connect with his family.

“We used to chant ‘family’ in the huddle, and I was very observant of him,” Olaya told The Athletic.

“He never chanted ‘family.’ I asked him, ‘Why don’t you?’, and he was like, “Man, it’s because I don’t know what family is.” That’s what he told me. Like, “I don’t trust a lot of folks here.” Slowly, he started opening up. It took months.”

The feature added that Mathurin lost his half-brother to a road accident at the age of 12, and he was about to throw his life and career away by joining a torrid crew at 16. Olaya was crucial in shaping Mathurin’s life, and his lessons and moves paid off, as the forward is now in a better place and well on his way to becoming a bonafide NBA star.
