Overreactions are quite common in the sports media world, especially when it comes to the Los Angeles Lakers.

They were dead and buried not too long back but a few impressive results recently have led to some believing that they can beat the top 2 teams in the Western Conference in the playoffs.

“It’s 3:15 pm so NBA Today is on now. I will watch it later, so I don’t know what’s happening now,” Zach Lowe said on his podcast (at the 12:30 mark). “I will tell people this, I got a call from the producers at 1:15 PM saying, ‘Hey, so we just polled everyone on the show today,’ all four panelists on the show, think it’s Ramona Shelburne, Tristan Thompson, Vince Carter, and… Marc Spears.”

“‘And we asked them, today, right now, if the Lakers played the Nuggets in a first-round playoff series, which by definition means Denver has home-court advantage, or if the Lakers played the Grizzlies in a first-round playoff series,’ Just those two teams was what was told to me, with the Grizzlies, of course, having home court, ‘Who would you pick?’ 4 for 4 Lakers over Nuggets, Lakers over Grizzlies.”

“The producers called me and said, ‘Do you think that’s a little off, and would you like to come on the show and say that that’s a little off?’”

Keep in mind that these comments did come before it was revealed that LeBron James suffered a serious foot injury which could keep him out for an extended period of time. Still, that doesn’t make this a whole lot better.

Sure, the Lakers are a much better team now, but to say for sure that they’d beat the Denver Nuggets or the Memphis Grizzlies in a first-round matchup is a bit much. They would have a chance to advance but would be the clear underdogs against both of them.

Stephen A. Smith Believes The Lakers Want To Face The Kings In The First Round

As for who the Lakers want to face in the first round, Stephen A. Smith believes it is the Sacramento Kings. Smith felt that the Lakers were targeting that 6th seed in order to face the Kings because they are an inexperienced team. All that has gone out of the window now, after LeBron’s injury.

Getting into the playoffs via the play-in seems most likely for the Lakers now, which means they will in all likelihood, face the Nuggets or the Grizzlies. It would be a fascinating first-round matchup and we’ll find out if the 4 individuals here were right in their assessment of how the series would pan out.
