The Golden State Warriors demonstrated they’re one of the best franchises in the NBA once again. The Dubs offered a Chase Center security guard a G League tryout with the Santa Cruz Warriors.
26-year-old Jonathan Amey Jr. has created a good relationship with the team over the years, greeting the members when they arrive at the arena and saying goodbye after their job is over.
An ex-intramural point guard, Amey Jr. received a big opportunity to showcase his talents in front of a few coaches. Warriors icon Stephen Curry discussed this matter, saying the players tried to encourage Jonathan to not be so hard on himself and enjoy the moment.
Via NBC Sports:
“He’s a constant figure when you’re coming out of the building,” Curry said after his warmup to face the Thunder on Saturday night. “It speaks about how encouraging, motivating and unifying basketball is for him to go put himself out there, go out for a tryout. He said his jumper needed some improvement. He’s a little self critical but we gave him the confidence to keep trying and keep his attitude high. I like the fact that he put himself out there because it’s no easy task. So, shoutout to Jonathan.”
After the workout, Amey expressed his excitement, saying he felt like a member of the team.
“I felt it, I had my jersey on and everything,” he said, noting his last regular basketball was playing intramural level at Cal State East Bay.
“It was just a great experience to be able to play at a pro level,” he said, “and be able to also just to have an opportunity to get a chance to do something most people wish they had the opportunity to do. I didn’t think I was going to get an opportunity so I just felt like, `Hey, if the offer’s there just go for it.”‘
Unfortunately, Jonathan didn’t make the cut, but he lived an experience that many people dream about. He seems pretty happy with his job and everybody on the team congratulated him for trying. The Warriors are a model franchise and this is another proof of that.
This team has made terrific things on and off the court, demonstrating they are on another level. In recent years, we’ve seen these types of stories in the league. Fans still remember when Andre Ingram made his debut with the Lakers in the association after spending 10 years in the G League and working as a teacher.
