Now that Ben Simmons has officially requested a trade from the Sixers, it seems only a matter of time before he gets sent to another organization.
So far, multiple teams have been rumored to be in the hunt, including the Timberwolves and Raptors.
But there have been some major rumblings regarding the Warriors as well, and many believe they are the most equipped to pull off a deal.
According to Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area, however, the front office remains split on what to do.
The Warriors, according to sources, are divided on the subject. Some see great potential in having two skilled players thriving in the ball-movement principles, especially in transition. Simmons also happens to be six years younger than Green.
Others, however, believe having two non-shooters on the court is too crippling for an offense, even with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, to overcome, particularly in the postseason.
Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green have been the backbone of the Warriors organization for years, and they’ve achieved great successes with the franchise.
But with superteams like the Nets and Lakers currently gunning for a title, that trio might no longer be enough to contend.
The Warriors have an abundance of young players and picks to work with, so they could make a move if they really want to.
But is Ben Simmons the guy to put them over the top?
With so many flaws offensively, and a questionable work ethic, there remains some serious doubt about his value as a player. Some believe there isn’t really a place for Simmons at all.
Simmons’s value, though, is almost secondary to the fact that his unique style (a defense-first player who isn’t a threat to shoot and has a non-traditional impact on both ends) makes finding a fit difficult. Not to mention that the lasting image teams have of him from last season is his passing up the easiest shot on the court. That’s why, even though a trade seems more likely than not, it may be a while before it happens.
“To be honest, there’s really no ideal place for him,” one Eastern Conference scout said.
Needless to say, nobody knows what the future holds in store for Ben. But as time passes by, and it becomes clear that his value is at an all-time low, it becomes more likely that he starts the season in Philly after all.
