Ahead of the showdown against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday, Warriors coach Steve Kerr gave his candid thoughts on the current state of the team. Kerr says he supports whatever the front office decides to do, even if it’s choosing not to do anything at all.
“I have 100% faith in our organization to do whatever the right thing is and sometimes the right thing is to not do anything. It depends on what you’re going to do, and what that means. Mike is so good at his job,” said Kerr on the Warriors’ future. “I feel in great hands with him and the whole organization. And they’re looking at everything.”
Kerr, who played for 15 years in the NBA, has thrived as head coach of the Warriors. As the captain of the ship with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, Kerr earned the Warriors’ trust during their title runs and he’s been operating full authority ever since.
This season, at 19-20, the Warriors are down to 12th in the West and 2.5 games back from a top-six seed. To say the pressure to make a move is immense would be an understatement, but Kerr says everyone is on the same page right now regardless of how it plays out.
“We are all on the same page. Players, management, ownership. We’re all on the same page. We trust each other, fighting together. We’re in it together and whatever direction we go, we’re all on board.”
The Warriors were leading the West not too long ago, but now they’ve slid down to 12th in the standings due to a brutal stretch of play. The trade for Dennis Schroder provided a nice boost and Stephen Curry, 36, has been doing everything in his power to turn the season around but none of it has been good enough so far for a team with so many flaws on both ends of the floor.
On the NBA trade market, it’s no secret that Jimmy Butler has made himself available but it remains to be seen if the Warriors have anything they can offer that would even remotely interest Pat Riley the Miami Heat.
With ties to various other players (Zach LaVine, Myles Turner), the Warriors have been busy this season gauging their options across the NBA. However, with limited assets available, they remain hesitant to finalize any deal.
At this point in their timeline, the Warriors would rather preserve their future than continue to try and build for immediate success. Stephen Curry himself has already warned the Warriors against making “desperate” trades that might jeopardize their future.
The best thing the Warriors can do now is just wait and see how the situation plays out. With this season headed downhill fast, it might push the Warriors into trying to preserve what few assets they have left.
With Curry, Draymond, and Kerr at the helm, the Warriors believe that they can still compete on a championship level. Now, the whole team needs to practice some patience so they can come together and figure out a solution on how to save their season.
