The NBA’s play-in tournament has generated a lot of controversy from players around the association.
Among them are LeBron James and Luka Doncic, who have both gone on record to question its value and purpose.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, however, took a different stance. With his team destined to compete in the tournament, he gave it a rather glowing review in his candid response on the matter:
“I love it,” he said, per 95.7 The Game. “The last month’s been infinitely more interesting for NBA fans. It’s great… If you finish 7th and you lose two straight, then you probably weren’t good enough to advance in the playoffs anyway. That’s just the truth.”
There is no doubt that the play-in tournament is attractive to the fans, which is kind of the whole point of the thing.
But there is also truth to the idea that losing two straight games as a 7th or 8th seed isn’t a good way to earn a playoff spot. Coincidently, or maybe not so, the Lakers currently sit 7th in the West, which only adds another layer of intrigue to Kerr’s statements.
If the play-in started today, the Warriors and Lakers would face off.
Needless to say, that’s the matchup we’re all looking forward to — including Steve Kerr.
