NBA Rumors: New York Knicks Could Pursue Dennis Schroder In Free Agency

Dennis Schroder is currently the starting point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers and is averaging 15.3 PPG and 5.3 APG. While his individual numbers were higher last season, that can be attributed to Dennis Schroder playing a larger role in the offense with Oklahoma City. On the Los Angeles Lakers, he is in a smaller role behind the team’s superstars when they are healthy, providing supplemental scoring to Anthony Davis and LeBron James.

Despite his lower numbers this season, Dennis Schroder is still a competent point guard, and he will hit free agency this season. Dennis Schroder has already declined an extension with the Los Angeles Lakers. Recently, Ian Begley of SNY reported that the New York Knicks could pursue Schroder in free agency.

But another lead guard on the Knicks’ schedule this week bears watching: Dennis Schroder.

Schroder is among the players on New York’s radar as the club looks ahead to free agency, SNY has learned.

New York will have enough cap space to make Schroder a competitive offer in free agency. The club is projected to have at least $50 million in cap space in the 2021 offseason.

Schroder, it’s worth noting, is an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. So the Knicks wouldn’t have to worry about offer sheets if they pursued him. But based on the extension offer Schroder reportedly declined from the Lakers, he probably won’t sign for less than $20 million per year.

They’ve overachieved so far this season, so you can make a strong argument to support that kind of spending.

Dennis Schroder would definitely provide a solid point guard option for the New York Knicks. Dennis Schroder is a fundamentally sound point guard that is also able to provide some supplementary scoring next to a superstar. If he gets back to shooting the 3PT shot as he did during the 2019-20 season (38.5%), he will be a perfect fit next to Julius Randle. While we don’t know Dennis Schroder’s specific free agency plans, it does seem like New York will be one of the teams to call his phone.
