Kevin Love was the first player to speak up on NBA players’ mental health issues, claiming that he had struggled with depression and anxiety and going as far as to admit that he had thought about suicide.
Now, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ star big man has once again reached out to the world and inspire those who’ve also struggled with those kinds of issues:
“If whoever’s gonna watch this who has had those thoughts before, I think it does cross your mind and I’ve just learned to speak my truth, honestly. I’ve learned that, you know, nothing haunts us like the things we don’t say. So me keeping that in is actually more harmful.” Love said.
Love shared his thoughts and emotions in a heartbreaking video, clearing the air on those who believe that he’s not entitled to be depressed just because he makes millions of dollars:
“I had a number of ways … the good thing that happens is when you do search that, it comes up with the national suicide prevention line. There were a couple ways that I toyed with, but it was just scary to get down that route and think about the idea of, you know, taking my own life,” he added.
“I’ve obviously had days that I really do struggle, I suffer a lot from impostor theory, as well. Like, I sometimes don’t feel deserving. I don’t feel like I’m worthy of what I’ve accomplished, or the success I’ve had, and a lot of times I feel like a fraud, because I don’t feel like I’ve achieved enough,” he concluded.
We truly hope that Kevin Love is one day able to find peace and realize all his accomplishments. Not many people can brag about the résumé he’s put together as an elite professional athlete.
Money and accolades aren’t everything in the world and we know that. Hopefully, he’ll reach out to his friends and family to find the love and understanding he needs in tough times like this. We’re here for you, big man-
