LeBron James and Chris Paul have been close friends since the latter entered the league and there has always been a lot of speculation on whether they would want to play together at some point in their careers.
However, for many different reasons, they haven’t been able to team up thus far, and with both of their career entering the final stage, the clock seems to be ticking for the ‘Banana Boat’ buddies.
Nevertheless, it seems like there may be a final hope of seeing CP3 and the King team up in the Los Angeles Lakers: the amnesty clause. And, according to Davide Tovani of Fansided’s Lake Show Life, the Thunder would be more than willing to amnesty CP3 to get rid of his massive contract:
“Enter the Oklahoma City Thunder, which, despite the unexpected season they are having, would gladly get rid of Chris Paul’s untradeable contract, that sees him still owed $41 million next season and $44 million the following one. This year they have the third-highest payroll in the league, with no real chances at the championship. Through the amnesty clause, OKC could free up massive cap space to carry on his rebuilding and free more playing time for his young players,” the report claimed.
Paul really turned back the clock this season with averages of 17.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.8 assists, and 1.6 steals per game on 48/36/90 shooting, beating the odds to lead the Thunder to a playoff berth and earning yet another All-Star nod at age 34.
James seems to be still at his best and as long as Anthony Davis also on board, the Lakers would be perennial Championship contenders. Add Paul to the mix and you have a deadly Big 3, for sure.
There are a lot of ifs, but maybe Paul will finally wear the purple and gold after all, and this time no one will be able to veto that move.
