The latest power rankings for the MVP race are now revealed. The best players in the league are, unsurprisingly, ahead of the pack in the MVP race.
While there are about ten players who can claim themselves as superstars in the league, only five can realistically win the MVP this season.
When the award is handed out at the end of the season, one of these five men will be crowned the Most Valuable Player. Crucial performances in critical moments will decide the outcomes of which player will be number one at the end of the season. games that were played recently and big-time performances have shaped the NBA MVP power rankings accordingly.
Here are the five players who can win the MVP this year.
5. Luka Doncic
29.6 PPG, 9.0 APG, 9.7 RPG, 1.2 SPG
Doncic has been at his best all year long and is slowly becoming the greatest talent the Mavericks have ever had. While he has some ways to go before he overtakes Dirk, Doncic could be the best Maverick ever if he keeps it up. For this season, Doncic has been doing it all for Dallas. He is the primary ball-handler and points guard for the team, along with being the team’s best scorer and clutch performer. Luka will almost certainly be a starter for the upcoming All-Star game, and might even be the team captain.
Doncic is still hovering around a triple-double and making it look as effortless as possible. His scoring, playmaking, and rebounding are at an MVP level without a doubt. What is even more impressive is that Dallas currently holds a playoff spot in the West, when many thought they were a year or two removed from being one. Doncic is a top-five MVP candidate and that won’t change.
4. Anthony Davis
27.1 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 3.2 APG, 2.6 BPG, 1.5 SPG
Unsurprisingly, AD plays like the best big man in the world when he is on the court. Davis completely dominates the game when he is playing, and that is why he is worth the package of young talent that the Lakers forked over to get him. Davis is doing it all for the Lakers, including scoring the ball at a high rate and being a defensive anchor.
He is also thriving at the power forward position, beating up on smaller defenders. Not to mention, AD is putting up over 27 points per game for a top-seeded Lakers team that many expect to be in the NBA Finals this year.
The Lakers seeding, paired with some big-time performances has made Davis a top MVP candidate so far. David will almost certainly start the All-Star Game for the West, and will almost certainly be the leading scorer for the Lakers all the way into the playoffs. AD is one of the only five players who can legitimately win the MVP this season.
3. LeBron James
25.1 PPG, 10.8 APG, 7.8 RPG, 1.3 SPG
LeBron James, the teammate of Anthony Davis, also has a serious shot to win the MVP Award. James has simply been superb and is by far the best floor leader in the game today. The fact that he is leading the league in assists shows how he could’ve been the number one point guard if he decides to play that way from the start of his career. Even though his scoring has taken a dip, his playmaking has been off the charts and he mentioned many times that AD will be the primary scorer for this team.
As usual, James has a case for winning every MVP Award every single season much as Michael Jordan did. This season, he trails only two players as he aims to claim his fifth MVP Award to add to his collection. James will likely remain a top-three candidate all season long but he has some work to do to catch the top two at the moment.
2. Giannis Antetokounmpo
30.2 PPG, 12.8 RPG, 5.5 APG, 1.3 SPG, 1.1 BPG
Reigning MVP The Greek Freak is once again a top two performer on the MVP rankings. He has been the best player for the best team in the East and is just an unstoppable force on both ends. Due to his unbelievable talent as the best player in the East at the moment, the Bucks are sitting pretty as the best team in the league with the best record.
The Bucks are legitimately one of the few teams that can actually win a title this year, and Giannis is at the forefront of a team predicated on pace, shooting, and defense. Giannis does it all on the floor, and his ability to score the ball whenever he wants forces defenses to throw two or three defenders at him when he’s close to the basket. This is how the Bucks generate so many open shots, not to mention the fact that Giannis can rebound and push the ball effectively as well.
Giannis has his team currently with the best record in the NBA once again, and that won’t change if he continues his level of play. After all, he has all the support he needs at the moment with a great coach and solid teammates. His scoring and rebounding numbers alongside his team’s record will give him a top-two chance at the MVP all season long unless something extraordinary happens. Giannis has a very high chance of being MVP two times in a row this year.
1. James Harden
37.9 PPG, 7.5 APG, 6.0 RPG, 1.8 SPG
While being in second place since the start of the season, Harden’s production can no longer be denied. Harden is simply the most unstoppable offensive player in the league, and many are convinced he is the best offensive talent we have ever seen. Looking back to his OKC days, nobody imagined he would be in the same conversation as Kevin Durant or even Russell Westbrook in terms of offensive firepower, but now he is being mentioned among the likes of Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan.
When it comes to the offensive impact on a game, Harden is just phenomenal and is one of the best regular-season players ever. His consistent production since the start of the season has led him to this point: overtaking Giannis as the number one favorite for the MVP Award at this moment in time.
The Rockets are slowly inching closer to a top-two seed in the West, and his performances should be enough to win him the award if the Rockets get to the second seed or possibly even the first seed by the end of the season. He must keep up his level of play, or else Giannis can overtake him at any moment. This MVP race is shaping up to be one of the best we have seen in a long time.
