The argument going around now is that the league is wide open in both conferences. I am here to inform the era of the superteam has not yet died. There are many potential teams we feel are this deep… Here are the 5 top NBA superteams.
5. Philadelphia Sixers
An argument could feasibly be made for the Sixers having the best starting 5 in the league. It’s all about chemistry. Imagine a starting 5 of Ben Simmons, Josh Richardson, Tobias Harris, Al Horford, and Joel Embiid. Coupled with a bunch of solid role players like Raul Neto, James Ennis, Mike Scott, and Kyle O’Quinn. The Sixers are filling out their roster. Slowly, but surely.
The Sixers are limited in what they can do since they are over the cap and dipping into the luxury tax. I hope other players are willing to sign with this contender at a discounted price. The Sixers are fresh off a nice 12 game 2019 playoff run. They were one Kawhi bounce from the Eastern Conference Finals. Losing JJ Redick to the Pelicans hurts and Jimmy Butler to Heat does not help heal wounds. The Sixers have potential replacements for these guys in Josh Richardson and Al Horford.
The fit is questionable to many, but sometimes high-level talents can figure it out. The Sixers have a potential lead by example guy in Horford and made their rival Boston foreseeably weaker with the move. In my opinion, Josh Richardson is a younger and poor man’s version of Jimmy Butler. A gritty two-way wing with explosive upside. The Sixers will be a top team in the East and win close to 58 games.
The best three and d guy in the NBA arguably in Danny Green signed with the Lakers followed by additions of Quinn Cook, JaVale McGee, and Kentavious-Caldwell Pope. Quinn Cook is a great fit as a point guard and retaining key pieces of McGee and KCP only bolsters this ballclub. The Lakers could definitely win the West.
4. Brooklyn Nets
The ability of this superteam largely hinges on Kevin Durant’s health. When healthy in my opinion he’s the best player in all of basketball. KD’s IQ is off the charts, his ability to play off the ball is sensational, the defense is criminally underrated, moves like a guard and sees the floor as a point forward.
Kyrie Irving is no consolation prize, one of the best ball handlers and under the rim finishers in the history of the sport. In his world, the Earth is flat, but his game is well rounded. A big three of Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, DeAndre Jordan is already one of the best in the league.
The Nets have a nice young core as well. Irving’s ability to coexist and lead this young core will determine their success rate. Veterans like Garrett Temple and Wilson Chandler should only serve to help matters. The promise of young studs like Caris LeVert, Jarrett Allen, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Rodions Kurucs.
3. Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers may have won the offseason. Jerry West does it again snagging a duo in Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. Sorry Lakers, but the Clippers are the better team in LA. They kept most of their core together and added by hitting the free agency jackpot.
Patrick Beverly is their glue guy. Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell are statistically the best bench duo in NBA history. Ivica Zubac, Landry Shamet, and Jerome Robinson are a nice existing young core. Getting back JaMychal Green or obtaining another skilled big like Marcus Morris Sr. should be a top priority. The Clippers could also win the West. They have the standing Finals MVP and another MVP candidate in Paul George. The two best two-way players in the NBA on one team. Get your popcorn and watch the fireworks.
2. Golden State Warriors
Stephen Curry is the best point guard in the NBA. Even, with Klay’s lingering injury and Kevin Durant’s hasty exit. The Warriors will stand tall. D’Angelo Russell has the height and off-ball ability to thrive in the two-guard spot. The backcourt could be similar to what we currently see in Portland with CJ and Dame. Two guards with excellent shot mechanics, passing instincts, ball-handling skills, and lightning speed.
The losses of Durant, Cousins, Iggy, and Cook will no doubt be continuously felt. The thing about dynasties is they always cover their tracks. Willie Cauley Stein is an adequate replacement for Cousins, possibly an upgrade considering Cousins injury recovery is still ongoing.
Draymond Green is capable of being the second-best player on this squad. The return of Kevon Looney is huge and he has definite star potential. The additions of Glenn Robinson III, Jordan Poole, and a healthier Damian Jones will make all the difference for this basketball team. Until further notice, The Warriors could very well still run the West.
1. Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers are officially out of the Kawhi sweepstakes, but they still have an impressive roster. Landing Anthony Davis via trade with the Pelicans was key as it established a potential Big 3 with the Lakers with Kuzma and LeBron. Yes, I am banking on Kyle Kuzma’s potential to break out next year and become a star.
The Lakers since they decided not to use their open max slot they spent the money by filling out their roster. First, let us consider the under-the-radar moves the Lakers made prior to the Kawhi Leonard news. Adding 3 and D guys in Troy Daniels and Jared Dudley. They are also a potential destination for Andre Iguodala if Memphis should buy him out.
Lakers are officially at the top of these rankings with the depth moves of DeMarcus Cousins and Rajon Rondo. Two of the hottest remaining free agents on the market each ended up in LA on low cost and low-risk deals. Previous chemistry with Anthony Davis can only serve them greatly. The Lakers bench 5 of Quinn Cook, Troy Daniels, KCP, Dudley and McGee is better than some starting 5s.
