DeMar DeRozan and rapper Drake were once good friends, but the two are beefing now. During the game between the Sacramento Kings and the Toronto Raptors, Drake stated he’d pull down DeRozan’s jersey if it were ever retired by the Raptors. The NBA star was informed about that comment postgame and clapped back at the rapper.
“He gonna have a long way to climb to take it down,” DeRozan said. “Tell him good luck.”
That was a hilarious response. Unfortunately for Drake, DeRozan’s jersey will be up there in the rafters at Scotiabank Arena at some point in the future and there’s nothing he will be able to do about it. DeRozan spent the first nine seasons of his career with the franchise and is currently their all-time leader in points and games played.
Even if you go back just a year ago, it would have been unthinkable that Drake and DeRozan would one day take shots at each other. They had grown rather close over time, with the NBA star even once calling the rapper his brother.
Drake mentioned DeRozan in his 2021 song “Lemon Pepper Freestyle” and it seemed like all was going to be well forever between these two. Then earlier this year, Drake’s feud with rapper Kendrick Lamar escalated and that was the beginning of the end of his relationship with DeRozan.
Lamar and DeRozan go back years, as they hail from Compton, California. When Lamar decided to release his fourth Drake diss track of the year “Not Like Us,” he managed to convince DeRozan to be a part of it. One of the lyrics for the song was, “I’m glad DeRoz’ came home, y’all didn’t deserve him neither.”
DeRozan then joined Lamar on stage for the rapper’s first live performance of the song in his Juneteenth show. He appeared in the music video that came out later too and all that was clearly too much for Drake. To go along with saying that he would pull down the jersey, he referred to his former friend as a “goof” and appeared to aim some expletives at him as well.
Even after appearing in that music video, DeRozan had stated he loved Drake but added Lamar was family. Considering what transpired on Saturday, I’d think that love is gone now.
Adding to DeRozan’s frustrations on the night was the fact that the Kings lost 131-128 to the Raptors in overtime to fall to 3-3 on the season. The 35-year-old had 33 points, three rebounds, four assists, and three steals against his former team but was unable to get the better of them.
