Superstar forward Kawhi Leonard is in the news for some unfortunate injury news yet again since he underwent knee surgery and could be out for the start of the season. We still expect Leonard to suit up and play at least 65 games in the 2024-25 NBA season but there could be a mock trade package available that could see the former Finals MVP end up with the Miami Heat. The Heat are still going all-in for the NBA title next season and by acquiring Kawhi Leonard, could create one of the best teams in the NBA.

Trade Details

Miami Heat Receive: Kawhi Leonard

Los Angeles Clippers Receive: Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson, Nikola Jovic, 2030 First-Round Pick, 2031 First-Round Pick

This mock trade package would shake the NBA landscape and also alter the legacies of some of the players involved on both teams. To entertain this trade idea, let’s go through how it would work out for the players and teams involved.

Miami Heat Create The Best Defensive Big Three Ever

By acquiring Kawhi Leonard, the Miami Heat would form an elite defensive trio with Leonard, Jimmy Butler, and Bam Adebayo. Kawhi Leonard is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in NBA history, with two Defensive Player of the Year awards and seven All-Defensive Team selections. His ability to lock down the opposing team’s best wing scorer is unparalleled, even with his injury concerns. When you pair that with Butler’s tenacity and defensive IQ (five All-Defensive Team selections) and Adebayo’s versatility, who can guard all five positions and has also made five All-Defensive Teams, the Heat would have a nightmare lineup for opposing offenses.

Offensively, this trio would thrive under Erik Spoelstra’s system, which emphasizes ball movement and defensive intensity. Leonard, who averaged 23.7 points per game in the 2023-24 season before being sidelined, could easily blend into Miami’s offensive schemes, complementing Butler’s playmaking and Adebayo’s ability to set screens and finish at the rim. Leonard’s catch-and-shoot ability (41.7% from three last season) would add a perimeter threat, spreading the floor for Butler and Adebayo to attack the paint. In key moments, the Heat could switch their focus to Leonard’s proven playoff scoring ability, where he has averaged 21.3 points per game throughout his postseason career.

Furthermore, with Leonard, Butler, and Adebayo, Miami would have a switch-everything defense that could challenge even the most dynamic offenses in the league. This kind of versatility is rare and could propel the Heat back into championship contention. Teams would struggle to score efficiently against a team where nearly every possession features an elite defender capable of forcing turnovers or contesting shots. This might be the most potent defensive big three since the days of the early-2000s Detroit Pistons, making Miami an immediate favorite in the Eastern Conference.

Los Angeles Clippers Kickstart Their Rebuild

For the Clippers, trading Kawhi Leonard signals the end of their pursuit of a championship with their current core, but the haul they receive in return gives them a solid foundation to rebuild. At just 24 years old, Tyler Herro represents a dynamic young scorer with the potential to be a star. In the 2023-24 season, Herro averaged 20.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game, showing his growth as a playmaker and all-around contributor. With a fresh start in Los Angeles, Herro could thrive in a larger role, becoming the centerpiece of the Clippers’ offense. He has already proven to be an elite three-point shooter, knocking down 39.6% of his shots from deep last season.

Adding Duncan Robinson provides the Clippers with a veteran sharpshooter who can stretch the floor and contribute to their offensive schemes. Robinson, who shot 44.6% from three in his career-best 2019-20 season, has struggled with consistency, but in the right system, his floor-spacing ability could flourish. His inclusion also allows the Clippers to maintain a veteran presence while developing younger talent. Alongside a young core, Robinson’s shooting threat will keep defenses honest and could help generate space for players like Herro to operate.

Perhaps the most intriguing asset for the Clippers is Nikola Jovic. The 21-year-old Serbian forward has shown flashes of high upside, with his 6’10” frame and versatile skill set. He has the potential to develop into a unique forward who can handle the ball, shoot from the perimeter, and guard multiple positions. Jovic’s development could accelerate in a rebuilding Clippers system that gives him more minutes and a larger role. Combined with two first-round picks, the Clippers now have assets to build for the future, potentially trading for other young stars or using them to rebuild organically around a new core.

One Of The Most Shocking Trades In NBA History

A trade sending Kawhi Leonard to the Miami Heat would rank among the most shocking in recent NBA memory, primarily because Leonard was brought to Los Angeles with the intention of delivering the Clippers their first-ever NBA title. Since joining the Clippers in 2019, Leonard, alongside Paul George, was expected to change the trajectory of the franchise. However, the “Lob City” era’s playoff shortcomings seemed to have carried over as Leonard’s tenure was marred by repeated injuries, making it impossible for the Clippers to contend at full strength. Trading Leonard would signify an acceptance that the original plan failed—a stunning reality for a franchise that put everything on the line to land him.

In NBA history, trades involving superstars in their prime have always been jarring, and this one would be no different. Comparisons would likely be drawn to trades like the 2011 deal that sent Chris Paul to the Clippers or the shocking 2019 trade of Anthony Davis to the Lakers. Each of these trades reshaped the NBA’s balance of power, and Kawhi to the Heat would have the same seismic impact. Leonard’s two Finals MVP awards and reputation as one of the best playoff performers in recent memory make him a prized asset, and his move to Miami would instantly vault them to the top of championship contenders. This kind of move would alter the expectations for the 2024-25 NBA season overnight.

What makes this trade even more shocking is the narrative arc of Leonard’s career, which has seen him transform from a quiet role player in San Antonio to a two-time Finals MVP, to the centerpiece of a Clippers franchise that sold its future to acquire him. His tenure in Los Angeles is one of missed opportunities, and a move to Miami might be seen as his last chance to cement his legacy as one of the greatest winners in NBA history. Meanwhile, for the Clippers, trading their franchise cornerstone would mark the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter, perhaps one that acknowledges that no amount of star power can overcome the cruel reality of injury-prone seasons.
