Jaylen Brown has been hard at work this offseason, after being snubbed by USA Basketball for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Brown recently posted some pictures on Instagram of him working out underwater in Manama, Bahrain, and they went viral as you’d expect.

That looks rather intense. Dribbling a basketball in one hand and lifting weights with the other while being underwater is quite something. Boston Celtics legend Kevin Garnett certainly thought that too, as he was quite impressed by what he saw.

“Lord… Jaylen Brown is underwater with a dumbbell in one hand and a basketball in the other…. Shyt might be over for everybody.”

Brown taking another step after winning the NBA title, Finals MVP, and Eastern Conference Finals MVP last season would be a scary sight for the rest of the league. I should make it clear, though, that this isn’t something the three-time All-Star just started doing.

It was back in 2022, that a video went viral of Brown’s insane underwater workouts. He was lifting dumbbells underwater back then too and it’s clearly something he feels is quite beneficial for him.

Jaylen Brown Spoke About His Underwater Workouts

While those images impressed many, there were those wondering how this actually helps a basketball player. Well, during an interview with YouTuber KT The Arch Degree earlier this year, Brown explained how embedding himself in water has helped him.

“I think the thing that I picked up the last couple years is working out in the pool,” Brown said. “… The more I’ve been embedding myself in water, the more I’ve seen my body transform in the last couple of years. I’ve gotten more athletic, I’ve gotten faster, I’ve gotten bigger and stronger and I credit it a lot to improving my relationship with the water.

“And it sound crazy, ‘cuz like some of the stuff that I have done is a little bit crazy,” Brown continued. “Almost like some Navy SEAL type of stuff… Jumping in the pool with a 100-pound weight vest on… Maybe not 100 maybe like 50.”

(starts at 17:57 mark):

Brown revealed that he also swims in a 10-11 feet deep pool and goes up and down while carrying weights. All that does sound rather intense and it shows the lengths that Brown is willing to go to, to get better. In the 2023-24 season, the 27-year-old averaged 23.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game. He also shot a career-best 49.9% from the field and was named an All-Star.

Brown somewhat surprisingly didn’t make any of the All-NBA teams, though, and perhaps it motivated him to step up his game in the playoffs. You wonder if the same is going to happen next season, following the Olympics snub.

The Celtics and their fans certainly would be hoping that proves to be the case. The New York Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers are going to present very tough challenges to the Celtics next season and they’ll need Brown to be at his best to get the better of them.
